Coming together for Israel

From the Editor

Our hearts are heavy this week as we read the news and watch reports of the unfolding events in Israel. As of the writing of this letter, more than 2,200 people have been killed and thousands of others injured since the unprecedented attack by Hamas over the weekend. To begin to quote stats and numbers would be futile, as they are changing by the moment. What we do know is that thousands have been killed, injured, and captured, including Americans.

Our friends, neighbors, and loved ones are hurting in unimaginable ways as they fear for the well-being of family members. We extend our hearts and prayers to everyone affected by this tragedy and send our condolences to those grieving.

We are a community, and that means we help each other. Whether through thoughts and prayers, donations, volunteer time, or moral support, as a community, we are supposed to lean on one another. Often times tragedy overseas leaves us feeling helpless, scared, and confused, but coming together can lighten the burden a little bit.

For those expressing concern about the events in Israel, there are several opportunities to offer support locally.

Local resident Gershon Trimpol is the vice chair of the American fundraising arm for Magen David Adom, Israel’s emergency medical system. ADMDA is a non-governmental organization that operates Israel’s ambulances and Medevac units. Michael Bloomberg is matching any funds raised at www.afmda.org/bloomberg-match.

The Jewish Community Center of Atlantic County is hosting a Community Solidarity Gathering on Sunday, Oct. 15, at 12:30 p.m. at Milton & Betty Katz JCC. On Tuesday, Oct. 17, the JCC will lead an Israel Rally beginning at Beth Israel in Northfield. Both events are in partnership with Jewish By The Shore. Visit jccatlantic.org for more information.

If you know of other ways to get involved and give back during this time, please tag us in flyers and information on social media @shore_local and Shore Local Newsmagazine.
