A new chapter has begun for one of Atlantic City’s most historic landmarks as Councilwoman Maria Lacca unveiled plans to transform the World War I Monument at O’Donnell Park into a striking new gateway feature for the city’s Fifth Ward.
Councilwoman Lacca was joined by Mayor Marty Small Sr., members of the Atlantic City Council, Alice Woods of the Chelsea Economic Development Corporation (EDC), residents, friends, family, and community supporters for the official unveiling and presentation of plans for a new lighting package for the monument.
The new lighting installation is designed to showcase the historic World War I Monument as a major visual landmark for residents, tourists, and visitors entering Atlantic City via Albany Avenue.
“This is about taking pride in our community and ensuring a Fifth Ward that residents can be proud of,” said Councilwoman Maria Lacca. “The World War I Monument is an important part of our history, and with this new lighting package, we have an opportunity to honor that history while creating something beautiful and welcoming for everyone who enters our city.”
The transformation of the World War I Monument will serve as a Signature Project for Councilwoman Lacca, representing the beginning of a broader beautification initiative throughout the Fifth Ward. Councilwoman Lacca said additional projects are planned as part of her vision to enhance public spaces, improve the appearance of neighborhoods, and create a more welcoming environment for residents and visitors.
The monument at O’Donnell Park holds a special place in Atlantic City’s history. The new lighting package will bring renewed attention to the landmark while helping establish it as a prominent nighttime feature along one of the city’s major entry points.
Mayor Marty Small Sr. and members of Atlantic City Council joined Councilwoman Lacca in celebrating the project and recognizing the history and importance of the monument.
Councilwoman Lacca expressed her appreciation to the city officials, community partners, residents, and supporters who joined her for the milestone and to those who will help bring the vision for the Fifth Ward to life.
“This is just the beginning, and the best is yet to come.” Lacca said.
