An adult and three juveniles are facing charges following a head-on crash involving a vehicle allegedly stolen from Longport, authorities said.
The crash occurred at about 7:30 a.m. Saturday on Route 50 in Hamilton Township, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office. Two people traveling in the other vehicle were killed. Their identities are being withheld until their families are notified.
Authorities have not released the names of those charged or specified what charges they face.
The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability is conducting a separate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. State law requires the Attorney General’s Office to investigate deaths that occur during encounters with law enforcement officers acting in their official capacity or while a person is in custody.
The law also requires such cases to be presented to a grand jury, which determines whether criminal charges against any officers are warranted.
Reports have raised questions about whether a police pursuit preceded the crash, but authorities have not officially confirmed that law enforcement was pursuing the stolen vehicle.
Video posted online appears to show the vehicle cross into oncoming traffic before colliding with another car.
Route 50 was closed between Second and Fourth streets as investigators processed the scene and crews removed the wreckage.
