The first jitneys in Atlantic City date to March 15, 1915, and looked very similar to regular cars. They were large, black Ford model-T touring cars, which used a rope-and-pulley system to open the back doors. Over the years, there have been more than eight different designs and at least four different colors for the Atlantic City jitneys. The current version, introduced in 1997, is a thirteen-passenger light-blue mini-bus by Champion Motor Coach. In 1982, a retired 1963 jitney was donated to the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of American History.

The word "jitney" is a slang word for nickel, which is what it cost in 1915 for a ride in one of Atlantic City's earliest buses. Even though the price has increased over the years, the name is stuck, and today, you can still hop on a jitney to travel around Atlantic City.

The Atlantic City Jitney Association, established in 1915, claims to be the longest-running unsubsidized transit company in the United States. Each jitney is individually owned and operated, and drivers keep the fares. The Association awards the franchises and regulates the appearance of the buses and drivers; the Association also issues fines for violations and holds its own traffic court.By Atlantic City ordinance, the number of jitney franchises is limited to 190. City ordinance also regulates the price per trip and controls the jitney routes. Most of the jitneys routes run along Pacific Avenue. A jitney shuttle also runs from the Atlantic City Train Station to the various casinos.

Sammy Davis Jr. visited Chicken Bone Beach in Atlantic City, New Jersey in 1952.

The beach was a segregated area for African Americans from 1900 until the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Chicken Bone Beach was a popular destination for African Americans to enjoy the beach and have entertainment.

The beach was located between Missouri Avenue and Ohio Avenue.

The beach got its nickname from the tradition of families bringing picnic baskets with fried chicken and burying the bones in the sand.

The beach was also home to impromptu concerts by musicians.

Other celebrities who visited Chicken Bone Beach included Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Jackie Robinson.

The beach was declared a local historic site in 1997.

The Chicken Bone Beach Historical Foundation promotes family programs and activities at the site.

The beach was open to everyone after the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Egg Harbor Township Police & EMS helped deliver a baby on Black Horse Pike Thursday, March 6. Today, all of them had the opportunity to meet with mom Sarah, and baby Miamor, who are doing very well. 🙌🏼

The successful delivery was a team effort. Dispatcher Juliet Lipari took the call and was able to keep things calm for mom while EHT police officers and EMS were directed to where mom was situated in her car- knowing she was minutes from giving birth.

Officer Wollermann then arrived on scene and began talking to mom and kept her calm as only moments after her arrival, mom began to give birth.

Thankfully, Egg Harbor Township Emergency Medical Services employees Jillian Mellish and Bill Shallcross arrived on scene… just in time to help deliver baby Miamor.
