Steel Pier opened in Atlantic City in 1898 and quickly became known as the “Showplace of the Nation.” With attractions such as the famous diving horse and performances by major entertainers, including Frank Sinatra, the pier became a centerpiece of the city’s entertainment scene.
More than a century later, Steel Pier remains a popular destination for residents and visitors. Although it has changed significantly over the years, its history lives alongside modern amusement rides, restaurants, bars and other attractions.
That history will be celebrated during the annual Steel Pier Alumni Reunion from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23.
Atlantic City native Jim Craine has organized the reunion for about 20 years, bringing together former employees, performers and visitors to reconnect and share memories.
Craine worked at Steel Pier from 1963 to 1973. During that time, he performed onstage, cared for the diving horses and worked as an usher in the Music Hall.
The free event is open to the public, including those who never experienced the original Steel Pier. Craine said he hopes attendees will enjoy its history while discovering what the landmark offers today.
Craine and Teddy Fusco will perform during the reunion. Guests can also enjoy food and drinks, enter to win free ride tickets and spend the afternoon reconnecting with friends.
Donations collected during the event will benefit the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, a Brigantine-based nonprofit organization that rescues and rehabilitates stranded marine animals.
“It’s going to be a really cool event, and we just want everyone to know about it and come join us,” Craine said. “I hope people come and bask in the history, as well as just have a great day in Atlantic City.”
For Craine, the event is also a celebration of his hometown and his lifelong connection to the city.
“This is my hometown,” he said. “I grew up on the Inlet, lifeguarded here for 25 years and sang in the casinos. I want people to see that history and feel the magic of Atlantic City again.”
Craine said another goal of the reunion is to showcase what Steel Pier has become. Its amusement rides, food options and ocean views offer visitors a modern experience while maintaining a connection to its storied past.
The reunion will bring together a little of old Atlantic City and a little of new Atlantic City, offering the community an opportunity to honor the past while creating new memories.
Whether they spent childhood summers at Steel Pier, once worked or performed there or have never visited, guests are invited to enjoy the music, food, attractions and ocean views while experiencing a landmark where generations of Atlantic City history unfolded.
