SPQR Stage Co. presents Bill Sterritt’s dark comedy “Pumpin’ the Chihuahua” Nov. 14-15 and 21-22 at studio;space in Somers Point.
The play follows Rey, a struggling Hollywood valet whose dreams of stardom collide with an unusual opportunity. After a mysterious producer tells him he resembles 1940s screen actress Maria Montez, Rey begins to see transformation as his escape from obscurity.
Meanwhile, his loyal roommate, Lupo, devises a scheme involving a championship Chihuahua, divine inspiration and a million-dollar ransom to save his friend’s life.
Blending absurd comedy and social satire, the play examines friendship, identity, faith, mental health, economic inequality and the pressures of reinvention.
“At its heart, this is a play about two friends trying to save each other,” Sterritt said. “Everything else — the Hollywood fantasy, the surreal comedy, even the Chihuahua — is in service of that friendship.”
New York actors James Camacho, Kamran Shustarian and Cintra Batchoo portray Rey, Lupo and Maria Montez, respectively. Brigantine’s Chikita Wallace plays Constance, a woman who finds salvation in dogs.
Performances are at 2 p.m. Nov. 14, 15, 21 and 22, with additional shows at 7 p.m. Nov. 14 and 21. An opening reception follows the Nov. 14 evening performance.
