Ahoy, mateys! Families are invited to embark on a swashbuckling theatrical adventure as Ocean City Theatre Company (OCTC) presents “How I Became a Pirate” at the historic Ocean City Music Pier on Tuesday, July 14, at 10:30 a.m. The production is the second offering in OCTC’s 2026 Children’s Theatre Series, which has been creating special summer memories for children and families for more than 14 years.

Based on the popular children’s book by Melinda Long and David Shannon, “How I Became a Pirate” follows young Jeremy Jacob as he is recruited by a band of colorful pirates led by Captain Braid Beard. As Jeremy learns the pirate way of life, he discovers that treasure comes in many forms and that home and family are worth more than gold.

Filled with catchy songs, high-seas adventure, and plenty of laughs, this family-friendly musical is perfect for audiences of all ages and continues OCTC’s tradition of bringing high-quality live theatre to the Jersey Shore.

Young audience members are encouraged to come dressed in their favorite pirate or princess attire and become part of the adventure. Whether sporting an eye patch, pirate hat, tiara or royal gown, children are invited to use their imaginations and join in the fun as the Music Pier transforms into a world of high-seas excitement

“We’re excited to continue our 2026 Children’s Theatre Series with this energetic and imaginative production,” said Michael Hartman, artistic director of Ocean City Theatre Company. “How I Became a Pirate encourages children to embrace their imagination while sharing valuable lessons about friendship, belonging, and what truly matters. It’s a fun-filled adventure the entire family will enjoy.”

OCTC gratefully acknowledges the generous support of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as the Cape May County Division of Culture & Heritage, whose funding helps make arts programming accessible to residents and visitors throughout the region.
