For years, people who regretted a tattoo had limited options: live with it, cover it up, or endure painful laser treatments that often left the skin blistered and irritated. Now, Amy Druding, owner of Permanent Cosmetics by Amy Druding in Somers Point, is offering magnetic tattoo removal, a new alternative that’s drawing attention for its gentler approach.
Amy has spent more than two decades helping clients improve their appearance through a variety of cosmetic and skincare services. In addition to permanent cosmetics and corrective treatments, she offers facials, waxing, microneedling, dermaplaning, body wraps, scar camouflage, and permanent cosmetic procedures including eyebrows, eyeliner, lips, and areolas for both men and women. Every October, she also provides areola restoration services at no charge. Today, she is one of the few practitioners in South Jersey offering Magnetic Tattoo Removal, a non-laser technique designed to lighten or completely remove unwanted tattoos and permanent makeup.
“This is healthier for the skin rather than something like a laser,” Amy explained during a recent interview. “You don’t get blisters, you don’t get sores, and people are amazed by the results.”
Unlike traditional laser removal, which uses intense heat to shatter ink particles beneath the skin, Magnetic Tattoo Removal works on the skin’s surface using specialized magnetic cartridges and a patented alkaline solution. The process is designed to draw tattoo pigment upward and out through the epidermis. According to Amy, some tattoo inks contain inorganic pigments and trace metal particles that help anchor the pigment into the skin. The magnetic device interacts with those particles, loosening and lifting the ink naturally.
“It literally breaks up those little particles underneath the skin and brings them up,” she said. “This treatment is effective on all Inorganic and Organic pigments, as not all pigments contain metals. The protocol was developed to work with a wide variety of pigment types and colors, including pigments that can be challenging with other approaches.”
One of the biggest advantages, she says, is comfort. Clients often report that the sensation feels similar to getting a tattoo rather than the burning commonly associated with laser removal. “My customers have told me from one to ten, it’s a three to five. It feels about the same as getting the tattoo itself,” Amy said.
The treatment can be used on both cosmetic tattoos and body art. Amy regularly works with clients who want to remove faded eyebrow tattoos, lighten permanent lip color, or correct older body tattoos that have blurred or spread over time.
“It could be anyone unhappy with an old tattoo or permanent makeup,” she said. “I treat everything from eyebrows and lips to fingers and body tattoos using this technique.”
The process usually requires multiple sessions depending on the age of the tattoo, depth of the ink, and the amount of pigment present. Treatments are typically spaced about four weeks apart to allow the skin to heal properly between sessions. For some clients, the goal is complete removal, while others simply want a tattoo lightened enough so a tattoo artist can create a cleaner cover-up.
“Sometimes people come to me first so I can lighten the tattoo, draw some of the ink out, and then the artist can go back into the skin and create new art,” Amy said.
After treatment, the extracted ink rises to the skin’s surface and forms a scab that naturally flakes away during healing. Because the method does not rely on heat or deep skin penetration, the risk of permanent scarring or hair loss is significantly reduced compared to some laser procedures. Magnetic Tattoo Removal also offers advantages for people with colorful tattoos. Traditional lasers can struggle with lighter pigments such as green, yellow, and white inks, while the magnetic method can work on virtually all colors and skin types.
