ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — Six people face charges following an altercation during a demonstration in Atlantic City on Saturday morning, according to police.
The demonstration began peacefully around 11 a.m. in the 2700 block of Atlantic Avenue before a dispute involving several people broke out within the crowd, police said.
As officers left the Public Safety Building to respond, they encountered protesters who had moved into the street. Another demonstrator was in a designated access area that police said had been kept clear so officers and members of the public could safely enter and exit the building.
Police said officers ordered the group to clear the street and access point. Several people who allegedly refused those directions were arrested. Investigators also identified and charged people believed to have participated in the original altercation.
One person suffered minor injuries and was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center for treatment. Police said that person was later issued a summons.
“The constitutional right to peacefully protest is fundamental and is respected by the Atlantic City Police Department,” Chief James Sarkos said. He added that demonstrations cannot obstruct access to a public safety facility or interfere with the public’s ability to obtain police services.
Police identified those charged as:
Diana Chaparro, 50, of Hammonton, was charged with simple assault.
Jose Salazar, 18, of Princeton, was charged with simple assault and illegal possession of a chemical device, identified by police as pepper spray.
Cristian Moreno-Rodriguez, 31, of Atlantic City, was charged with obstruction of justice.
Keli Smith, 41, of Egg Harbor Township, was charged with obstruction of justice and resisting arrest.
Anthony Diaz, 30, of Newark, was charged with obstruction of justice.
Devon Barber, 28, of Atlantic City, was issued a complaint charging simple assault.
All charges are accusations. Each defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
