The Marjorie & Lewis Katz Jewish Community Center (JCC) invites the community to an inspiring evening of art, creativity and local culture at an Art Gallery Reception on Thursday, Aug. 6, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. The featured exhibit, showcasing the work of acclaimed local artist Jon Baker, is currently on display and will remain open through Tuesday, Sept. 22.
Widely recognized as one of the most collected artists on the island, Baker is celebrated for his vibrant work that captures the essence of life Downbeach. Drawing from decades of personal experience, his artistic journey reflects his deep roots in the community, from his early days as a Margate Beach Patrol lifeguard to his 25-year tenure as a bartender at the beloved Steve & Cookie’s.
The exhibit features colorful interpretations of Lucy the Elephant, along with beach scenes and well-known Downbeach landmarks, all brought to life through Baker’s signature bold colors and imaginative perspective. His paintings blend nostalgia with fresh, uplifting energy, inviting viewers to reconnect with the places, people and moments that make the shore so special.
“As soon as you see Jon’s artwork, you know you’re looking at something uniquely Downbeach,” said Barbara Cohen, Adult and Community Program Director at the Marjorie & Lewis Katz JCC. “His paintings are full of color, personality and local pride. Art has a way of bringing people together, and Jon’s work does exactly that. His paintings celebrate the places we know, the memories we cherish, and the joy of living at the shore. We’re delighted to welcome him to the Katz JCC and invite everyone to come experience this special exhibit.”
The August 6 reception offers guests the opportunity to meet the artist, explore his latest collection, and enjoy an evening of culture and conversation. Community members and visitors alike are encouraged to attend this FREE event where light refreshments will be served.
