Letter from the editor

This month, thousands of graduates will toss their caps into the air, celebrating the end of one chapter and the beginning of another.

These graduates are our future leaders, doctors, nurses, teachers, therapists, builders, electricians, entrepreneurs and innovators. They are the generation that will shape what comes next.

I remember how strange it felt when my children’s friends first entered the workforce. Suddenly, the cashier at the grocery store or the attendant at the gas station was one of the little kids I remembered from the kindergarten bus stop — only now in a grown-up body. Years later, those same “kids” are the physical therapists, fire fighters, teachers, nurses, doctors and pharmacists we rely on. Sometimes it still catches me by surprise.

What will the future look like for this generation of graduates? The truth is, no one knows.

The only certainty is that it will be very different from the world many of us entered after graduation. I never imagined I would see college students majoring in cannabis studies. When I was younger, people faced serious legal consequences for possessing marijuana. Today, medical and recreational cannabis have created an entire new industry with career opportunities that seemed unimaginable a generation ago.

As we’ve witnessed the digital era unfold, the pace of change continues to accelerate. Experts predict that artificial intelligence (AI) will transform our lives even more dramatically than the internet did. That seems almost unfathomable. While some worry about jobs being replaced by automation, history has shown that innovation often creates new opportunities alongside the development of new technology.

The world has changed dramatically during our lifetime, transforming how we communicate, work, learn and connect with one another. The world our parents entered was also very different from the one we inherited, just as today’s graduates will navigate a future unlike anything other. Yet despite all the advances in technology, one thing remains constant: the power of human imagination and the importance of our interaction together.

It reminds me of Disney’s Carousel of Progress, a classic attraction in The Magic Kingdom that celebrates innovation and the evolution of everyday life. As the ride moves through historical moments of innovation, each generation embraces new things that make life easier, faster and more connected. The message is simple but powerful: progress continues, and each generation helps move it forward. One line from the attraction’s famous theme song has always been meaningful to me: “There’s a great, big, beautiful tomorrow shining at the end of every day.”

Congratulations to all those celebrating a graduation this year. Dream big. Work hard. Stay curious. The future belongs to those willing to embrace possibility, and your journey is just beginning.

Peace & Love,
Cindy
