The Knights of Columbus, of Saint Joseph Church, hosted their annual Spelling Bee for local eighth graders on February 26, inside Saint Joseph’s Parish Life Center, with family members and friends cheering on the participants.
Fifteen students competed, from Dennis Township School District and Bishop McHugh Regional Catholic School. The winning word was “thorax.” After the competition, the attendees enjoyed a pizza party.
The first place winner was Bishop McHugh student, Layla Mitchell (age 14, of Ocean View), who won a cash prize of $250. Second place went to Dennis Township Student, Tori Bucci (age 13, of Ocean View) winning a $150 cash prize. Third place winner was Bishop McHugh student, Riley Reich (age 14, of Seaville), who won a $100 cash prize. Along with the cash prizes, each winner also received a commemorative plaque.
The Spelling Bee Moderator, Mike Jargowsky said, “This event brings together students from all over Cape May County, from different school districts, and it’s a great family night.” He added, “The kids did a fantastic job during the competition, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves – and it’s always wonderful to see the audience cheer on the students. The Knights of Columbus are happy to host this event every year, as we have done for more than two decades.”
On March 22, the first and second place winners will advance to the Knight of Columbus’s Diocesan Spelling Bee in Camden, and the winners of that event will compete in April in the State Championship.
