Shore Medical Center announced it has reached a major milestone in its 10-year facility improvement plan with the completion of the renovations of its 4th Whitby unit. These upgrades, focused on creating a modern, healing environment, represent the hospital’s continued investment in delivering high-quality, compassionate care to the community.
Renovating patient rooms and units throughout the hospital has been the centerpiece of the plan, now in its seventh year. These renovations feature updated aesthetics, new materials, modern infrastructure, and the integration of current healthcare technologies. Each room renovation is designed to enhance comfort, safety, and the overall patient experience.
“We’ve been systematically upgrading patient rooms across all units, and we are now accelerating our schedule to complete the final phase of room renovations by the end of next year—well ahead of the original 10-to-12-year plan,” said David Hughes, CEO & President of Shore Medical Center. “As each phase is completed, patients and families are welcomed into spaces that reflect the excellence of our clinical care and far exceed expectations.”
Shore’s transformation doesn’t stop at the patient rooms. The facility upgrades also include:
- New flooring throughout the hospital, providing a cleaner, more cohesive, and inviting environment.
- Renovated nursing stations on every unit, featuring higher countertops for ease of writing, new cabinetry, and improved lighting—all designed in collaboration with nursing staff and leadership.
- Replacement and modernization of elevators in both the Hayes and Stainton towers, enhancing both function and aesthetics.
- Ongoing renovations to hallways, entrances, and other public areas, ensuring the entire hospital reflects the standard of care provided within.
In addition to the unit and room renovations, Shore also announced the completion of a major Emergency Department renovation, which includes ten new negative pressure rooms to support advanced infection control and emergency readiness. This project was made possible through a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
“We extend our sincere thanks to the U.S. Department of Agriculture for funding this important Emergency Department project,” Hughes said. “This space played a critical role during the COVID-19 pandemic and is now fully renovated to serve our community in future emergencies and every day care.”
Other Emergency Department enhancements include:
- A new adult sensory care program, following the successful pediatric sensory-friendly care model.
- A specialty care room for children, tailored to the needs of pediatric patients.
- A renovated Family Room, providing privacy and comfort to families during high-stress situations.
Shore Medical Center also recognized the critical role of its Plant Operations team in making these improvements possible. “These achievements reflect the extraordinary dedication of our entire team, especially our facilities and plant operations staff,” Hughes said. “We are incredibly grateful to our electricians, plumbers, boiler room operators, carpenters, and painters. Their contributions are essential to creating the environment of exceptional patient care.”
