Under a proposed bill in Trenton, New Jersey residents owning electric bikes and scooters would be mandated to register these vehicles and secure insurance prior to their operation on public roads.
This initiative marks a first for e-bike regulation, with Texas being the sole state mandating both registration and insurance for e-scooters. The legislation stipulates the acquisition of liability insurance, pedestrian personal injury protection, and coverage for uninsured motorists.
Registration would be facilitated through the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission and require annual renewal.
Importantly, the bill specifies that e-bike and e-scooter operators would not need a driver’s license and would be permitted on all road types, including highways.
