Three well-known organizations, each serving the community in different but equally important ways, recently came together to honor dedication, sacrifice and service throughout Ocean City. The Knights of Columbus, the Ocean City Fire Department and the Ocean City Police Department gathered to recognize two individuals whose commitment to protecting and serving others has made a lasting impact on the community.
The Knights of Columbus, a 144-year-old Catholic fraternal organization founded on the principles of charity, unity and patriotism, has long been dedicated to supporting communities across the country. Locally, the Father Thomas F. Blake Council #2560 in Ocean City has spent decades giving back through charitable efforts, volunteer work and recognition of local heroes who go above and beyond in their professions.
For approximately 40 years, the Ocean City Knights of Columbus Council #2560 has presented an annual Blue Shield Award to one member of the Ocean City Fire Department and one member of the Ocean City Police Department. The honor recognizes individuals who not only excel professionally within their departments, but also demonstrate exceptional involvement in community service and a strong commitment to the people they serve every day.
The award highlights the dedication required to protect a shore community like Ocean City, where first responders face unique challenges year-round. During the summer months, the city’s population swells with visitors, increasing the demands placed on emergency personnel. In the quieter off-season months, firefighters and police officers continue to remain vigilant, protecting residents and responding whenever needed.
This year’s Blue Shield Award recipients, Firefighter George Karpinski and Patrolman Alexandra Sharp, were recognized for taking their responsibilities to another level through years of commitment, professionalism and compassion.
Karpinski serves as a senior firefighter and Engine-1 driver on C-Platoon with the Ocean City Fire Department. He has dedicated 37 years to emergency services, spending nearly four decades helping protect the community during emergencies, fires and critical incidents. Throughout his career, he has earned the respect of fellow firefighters not only for his experience and leadership, but also for the support he consistently provides to those around him.
“His willingness to support his fellow firefighters during their most difficult moments speaks volumes about his character,” said Fire Chief Barnard Walker. “I have had the privilege of knowing and working with FF Karpinski for the past twenty-one years.”
Walker’s comments reflect the impact Karpinski has had within the department over the years. Beyond responding to emergencies, his dedication to mentoring younger firefighters and standing beside his fellow crew members during difficult situations has helped strengthen the department as a whole.
Patrolman Alexandra Sharp was also recognized for her outstanding dedication and service through the Ocean City Police Department. Police officers are often among the first people community members turn to during difficult moments, and the Blue Shield Award recognizes those who continuously demonstrate professionalism, compassion and commitment both on and off duty, like Sharp.
In a statement recognizing the honor, the Ocean City Police Department shared their support and appreciation for Sharp’s achievement.
“We are excited to see you continue to represent this prestigious honor well into the future,” the department said.
The annual Blue Shield Award ceremony continues to serve as a reminder of the strong connection between local organizations and the first responders who dedicate their lives to protecting the community. Through the partnership between the Knights of Columbus, the fire department and the police department, Ocean City is able to publicly recognize the individuals who quietly work every day to keep others safe.
For both Karpinski and Sharp, the recognition represents far more than an award. It reflects years of sacrifice, countless hours spent serving others and an unwavering commitment to Ocean City and the people who call it home.
