Certain smells immediately feel like summer: salty ocean air, sweet funnel cake drifting down the Boardwalk, and fresh-cut fries coming out of the fryer. Add the sounds of rides moving up and down the tracks, flashing lights and families making their way from one attraction to the next, and you have the familiar soundtrack of an Ocean City summer.
In Ocean City, the Boardwalk is more than a place to walk. For generations, families and friends have gathered around paper trays and baskets of Boardwalk favorites, sharing bites between rides, games, and strolls. Growing up in Ocean City, I have always thought of Boardwalk food as part of the experience rather than simply something to eat. Sometimes you have a plan, and other times you are walking past a stand, smell something coming out of the fryer, and suddenly decide you need it.
That is part of what makes Boardwalk food so memorable. One person wants fries, someone else wants something sweet, and another person spots something they have never tried. Before long, you are sharing food, deciding what to try next, and probably debating where you are headed afterward. If you ask me, sometimes the best Boardwalk meals are the ones that come with a little extra crunch.
Hangry Bites: Sweet and salty cravings
Located near the Ocean City Waterpark, Hangry Bites is a stop worth remembering when a Boardwalk craving hits. The menu includes classic French fries along with fried Oreos and fried pickles, making it an easy option when everyone in your group is looking for something different.
For someone with a sweet tooth, the fried Oreo is hard to overlook. The first time I had one, it reminded me of eating a warm brownie as a kid. The chocolate cookie softens as the Oreo is dipped in batter and fried, creating a warm center surrounded by a crisp exterior. It is gooey, warm, and sweet without needing a fork — exactly the kind of treat that fits a Boardwalk night.
Then there are the fried pickles. The tangy, salty flavor of the pickle paired with crispy batter creates a combination that works surprisingly well. Every bite starts with that crunch before getting to the familiar pickle flavor underneath. Sometimes the unexpected Boardwalk snack ends up being the one you go back for.
Promenade Food Court: A classic Boardwalk stop
After a day of rides, water slides and exploring the Boardwalk, sometimes the best plan is simply finding a place where everyone can grab something they like. Promenade Food Court, located near the Ocean City Adventure Waterpark and golf course, offers that kind of casual gathering spot. It is the type of place where you can keep things simple, grab some food, and get back to enjoying the rest of your day.
For me, fresh-cut fries are one of those Boardwalk classics that never really go out of style. There is something about sharing a platter with a group that feels distinctly like summer. Someone reaches for one, another person steals two more, and suddenly the entire tray is disappearing faster than expected. It is not necessarily about having the most elaborate meal; it is about sitting down, sharing food, and talking about everything that happened that day.
A summer evening on the Boardwalk does not need much more than a basket of fries, good company, and nowhere else you need to be.
Curly’s: The fries you take with you
You know a Boardwalk food stop is popular when the line seems to have a life of its own. Curly’s has become a familiar Ocean City Boardwalk name, with several locations making it easy to grab a serving of its signature wavy fries while continuing your walk.
And yes, I have absolutely gotten Curly’s fries and kept walking.
That is part of the fun. The fries are made for a grab-and-go Boardwalk experience. You can carry them toward the rides, the beach, or simply along the Boardwalk while watching the crowds. The playful French fry character, complete with sunglasses and a mustache, is also hard to miss.
For me, Curly’s fries are connected to those simple Boardwalk nights when you are walking without a real destination, grabbing a snack and deciding what ride or game comes next. Sometimes the food is part of the activity.
Chickie’s & Pete’s: A little taste of Philadelphia
As someone who grew up in the Philadelphia suburbs, went to college in the city, and spent time living there, Chickie’s & Pete’s has always felt like a familiar name, especially on game day. The restaurant’s crab fries, covered in Old Bay seasoning and served with its signature dipping sauce, immediately bring Philadelphia sports memories to mind.
While Ocean City has plenty of its own Boardwalk classics, Chickie’s & Pete’s offers a little connection to home for those who grew up around Philadelphia. There is something fun about finding a familiar favorite in a completely different setting. Instead of sitting in front of a television watching a game, you might be eating crab fries surrounded by Boardwalk lights, the sounds of rides and summer crowds.
The setting changes, but the craving stays the same. That is part of what makes Boardwalk food memorable: It can remind you of a place, a person, a vacation, or even a particular summer.
JiLLy’s French Fry Factory: Fried food meets the rides
If your idea of the perfect Boardwalk snack is anything that can be dipped in batter and dropped into a fryer, JiLLy’s French Fry Factory is calling your name. Located near Playland’s rides, JiLLy’s offers a lineup of fried favorites, including funnel cakes, fried Oreos, fried candy bars, and chicken tenders.
It is also the kind of place that fits naturally into the ride experience. You can stop for a bite before heading onto the rides or reward yourself afterward. As you approach, you may even spot the JiLLy’s French Fry Factory mascot waving from above.
There is something about the combination of amusement park rides and fried food that just works. You are at the Boardwalk; it is summer, and you are allowed to have the funnel cake, fried Oreo, or whatever else catches your attention. Sometimes you just have to embrace it.
More than just a snack
Boardwalk food is not just about satisfying hunger. It is about the memories attached to it: the fries you shared with friends before heading onto a ride, the fried Oreo you convinced yourself counted as a snack instead of dessert, the funnel cake covered in powdered sugar, or the pickle you tried because someone insisted it was good.
Growing up here, I think that is one of the things I appreciate most about the Boardwalk. So much of the experience is spontaneous. You do not always need a plan. You can simply walk, look around, and see what catches your attention. Maybe it is a ride, a game, or the smell coming from a food stand that suddenly makes you realize you are hungry.
For many visitors, these foods become part of their own Ocean City traditions. They are the flavors people remember when summer is over, and the Boardwalk gets quiet. You might have a favorite ride, a favorite ice cream stop, or a favorite place to grab fries, and eventually those places become part of your summer routine.
For me, some of the best Boardwalk memories are connected to those simple moments — walking with friends, stopping for fries, trying something new, or grabbing something sweet before heading back toward the rides. The food may only take a few minutes to eat, but just like the rides, the memory can stick around much longer.
Whether your favorite is a basket of fresh-cut fries, a warm fried Oreo, a crispy pickle, crab fries, or something dipped in a secret batter, there is always another bite waiting around the corner. In Ocean City, the Boardwalk has a way of turning simple things into summer traditions, and sometimes those memories are made one bite at a time.
