Chuck Darrow

There is no reporter anywhere who has covered Atlantic City’s casino scene longer than Chuck, who was there when casinos were legalized by voters November, 1976. Since then, he has chronicled the good times and bad for regional publications and websites including the Courier-Post of Cherry Hill, NJ and Philadelphia Daily News as well as Shore Local Newsmagazine, for which he began writing in 2023. During his nearly 50 years writing about local gaming halls, he has covered numerous casino openings (and closings) and a Who’s Who of show business legends who have performed in Atlantic City including Frank Sinatra, Paul McCartney, Diana Ross, Tony Bennett, Bob Hope, Richard Pryor, Jerry Seinfeld and The Rolling Stones. Each week, Chuck keeps readers on top of what’s happening in the casinos so they may get the most out of their visits. When he’s not working the beat he loves, Chuck plays bass in Pure Petty, a popular Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers tribute band.

‘Little’ Anthony Gourdine: From the subway to eight decades of stardom

by Chuck Darrow | Jun 5, 2025 | Features, Atlantic City, Atlantic City Casinos, Atlantic County, Entertainment, History, South Jersey

The Casino File The reason cliches become cliches is because they are grounded in truth. For instance, one of pop music’s most ingrained tropes is that of groups of 1950s urban youths gathering in subway stations, school bathrooms or other, similarly tiled spaces in...

How watching Japanese animation led Chef Leslie to Hard Rock’s Kuro restaurant

by Chuck Darrow | May 29, 2025 | Atlantic City Casinos, Atlantic City, Atlantic County, Features, Food & Beverage, South Jersey

The Casino File Every chef has their own tale of how and why they decided on a career in culinary arts. But it seems a pretty safe bet that there is only one stove jockey — in Atlantic City, at least — who was inspired by the popular Japanese animation form know as...

As Alice Cooper heads to Ocean, a look at why he’s so important

The Casino FileBy Chuck Darrow Over the course of his nearly-60-year career, 1970s “shock-rock” icon Alice Cooper has sold some 50 million albums and remains a popular live attraction (if not the arena-filling sensation he once was). And he’s enshrined in the Rock...

The Casino FileBy Chuck Darrow Once upon a time, when Atlantic City was the only place outside Nevada with legal casinos, thousands would ride chartered buses here for a day of gambling and related activities, from dining to, when the weather permitted, strolling the...

Remembering when giants roamed AC’s C-suites

by Michael | Apr 24, 2025 | Atlantic City, Atlantic County, Entertainment, Features, History, South Jersey, Wahoo

Remembering WhenBy Chuck Darrow If you think about it, a casino is, in some ways, a microcosm of a city or state. Like them, a gambling den collects revenue, has a dedicated law enforcement operation and has a chief executive whose responsibility is to oversee all...
