Chuck Darrow

There is no reporter anywhere who has covered Atlantic City’s casino scene longer than Chuck, who was there when casinos were legalized by voters November, 1976. Since then, he has chronicled the good times and bad for regional publications and websites including the Courier-Post of Cherry Hill, NJ and Philadelphia Daily News as well as Shore Local Newsmagazine, for which he began writing in 2023. During his nearly 50 years writing about local gaming halls, he has covered numerous casino openings (and closings) and a Who’s Who of show business legends who have performed in Atlantic City including Frank Sinatra, Paul McCartney, Diana Ross, Tony Bennett, Bob Hope, Richard Pryor, Jerry Seinfeld and The Rolling Stones. Each week, Chuck keeps readers on top of what’s happening in the casinos so they may get the most out of their visits. When he’s not working the beat he loves, Chuck plays bass in Pure Petty, a popular Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers tribute band.

by Cindy Fertsch | Jan 18, 2024 | Atlantic City, Atlantic City Casinos, Atlantic County, Entertainment, Events & Happenings, Features, South Jersey, Wahoo

By Chuck Darrow As recently noted in this column, the biggest casino-entertainment happening of 2023 was the early-summer debut of “The Hook” at Caesars Atlantic City. The adults-only revue, which blends raunchy humor with top-shelf “Cirque”-style specialty acts is...

Remembering when a Canadian embezzler shut down an AC casino

by Cindy Fertsch | Jan 11, 2024 | Atlantic City, Atlantic City Casinos, Atlantic County, Features, History, South Jersey

By Chuck Darrow A fascinating—if, at this point, nearly forgotten—story of Atlantic City’s legal-gaming era is that of Brian Molony, who, in the early 1980s, became the only gambler to cause a casino to cease operations. On the surface, Molony, a Toronto, Canada...
