Summer means different things to different people. For many, it brings barbecues, beach days and time with family. For movie lovers, it marks the arrival of blockbuster season, when theaters debut many of the year’s biggest releases.

Local theaters are preparing for one of their busiest times of the year, offering a diverse lineup of action, comedy, family films, science fiction and horror. Whether audiences are looking for superhero adventures, animated favorites or edge-of-your-seat thrillers, this summer’s schedule has something for nearly every moviegoer.

Among the season’s most anticipated releases are “Masters of the Universe” and “Supergirl.” Comedy fans can look forward to “The Devil Wears Prada 2” and “Scary Movie,” while families can enjoy “Minions & Monsters” and “Toy Story 5.” Horror enthusiasts also have plenty to choose from, including “Backrooms” and “Disclosure Day.”

Summer is traditionally the busiest season for movie theaters. With children out of school and families traveling, theaters often see increased attendance. Rainy weather can also provide a boost as beachgoers and vacationers look for indoor entertainment.

The moviegoing experience has evolved significantly in recent years. Many theaters now feature reserved seating, reclining chairs and upgraded digital projection systems designed to provide greater comfort and an enhanced viewing experience.

Concessions have also expanded beyond the traditional popcorn, candy and soft drinks. Many theaters now serve items such as pizza, pretzels and other hot foods as they compete with restaurants and other entertainment venues.

South Jersey moviegoers have several options. Tilton Square Theatre in Northfield and Ventnor Square Theatre in Ventnor continue to showcase the latest releases, while Regal Hamilton Commons in Mays Landing offers first-run films along with occasional screenings of classic favorites. The IMAX Theatre at Tropicana Atlantic City provides audiences with the opportunity to experience select films on a larger screen with immersive sound.

Buying tickets has never been easier. Online and mobile purchasing allows moviegoers to reserve seats before arriving, eliminating long lines at the box office and making it easier to secure tickets for highly anticipated releases.

Although streaming services have transformed the entertainment industry by allowing audiences to watch movies from home, the theater experience continues to attract movie fans. The combination of a giant screen, immersive sound and the excitement of sharing a film with a live audience remains difficult to duplicate.

As theaters continue investing in technology, comfort and expanded food options, the traditional trip to the movies remains a popular summer pastime for families, couples and film enthusiasts alike.
