It may still be beach weather in South Jersey, but step inside Harbor Square on Aug. 1 and you’ll swear October has arrived.
The air will buzz with chainsaw-wielding maniacs, towering monsters, eerie music and the delighted screams of Halloween fans as Spirit Halloween throws open the doors to its flagship store in Egg Harbor Township.
The annual Grand Opening Celebration — returning after a one-year hiatus — has become something of a pilgrimage for horror lovers, collectors and families eager to be the first to experience the country’s biggest Halloween retailer in its hometown.
Before the ribbon is even cut at 10 a.m., thousands of fans are expected to fill the parking lot. Many will arrive dressed as ghosts, witches, slashers and superheroes, cameras in hand, ready to document the moment spooky season officially begins.
Games, giveaways, food, exclusive merchandise and interactive displays will transform the shopping center into a Halloween festival hours before the flagship store opens its doors.
After pausing the tradition last year because of supply chain disruptions, Spirit Halloween expects a massive turnout. More than 2,000 fans claimed advance registration spots almost immediately, prompting the company to introduce a new digital reservation system. General admission remains free and open to the public.
But for many visitors, the real stars aren’t the costumes. They’re the animatronics.
Each summer, Spirit unveils a fresh lineup of larger-than-life creations that twitch, lunge, laugh and shriek with movie-quality effects. Guests crowd around the displays, eagerly waiting to press the activation buttons before instinctively jumping backward when a monster suddenly springs to life.
This year’s collection leans heavily into classic horror and elaborate storytelling. Fans will encounter an officially licensed 6½-foot Michael Myers stalking silently with knife in hand, the towering Pumpkin Punisher, the swamp-dwelling Bog Monster, the snarling Xenomorph from Alien, Jeremy Jaws, Willow Witch, Lady Misfortune, Fiona Frazzles, Harmonica Hank and the delightfully creepy Harvey Carvey, among dozens of other new creations.
Many of the displays are more than static decorations. Eyes glow from the darkness. Fog spills across the floor. Hidden speakers unleash unsettling laughter, whispers and screams.
The flagship store gives visitors a chance to see the full collection operating together long before most seasonal locations open.
Adding to the atmosphere is this year’s immersive in-store experience, themed around Camp Harbor Lake. Rather than simply shopping aisle by aisle, visitors wander through a theatrical setting inspired by an abandoned summer camp where every cabin, trail and dark corner seems to hide something sinister. It’s designed to feel like stepping into a haunted attraction as much as a retail store.
Spirit Halloween has come a long way from its humble beginnings. Headquartered in Egg Harbor Township, the company now operates more than 1,600 seasonal stores across North America, but the flagship location remains the birthplace of every Halloween season.
For fans, visiting Harbor Square is a bucket-list tradition, offering an early look at decorations, costumes and collectibles before they appear on shelves nationwide.
One noticeable change this year comes outside the store. Overnight camping — once a hallmark of the event, with dedicated fans pitching tents to secure the first place in line — has officially been banned.
Spirit Halloween, working with Egg Harbor Township Police, is asking guests not to arrive before 7 a.m. and prohibiting overnight parking or camping anywhere in Harbor Square to improve safety and traffic flow.
Traffic traveling from West Jersey Avenue towards the Harbor Square will be redirected into the first access roadway that continues onto the Black Horse Pike. Only the Harbor Square parking lot will be affected by the crowds, so don’t worry about road closures.
Traffic controllers and police officers will work together to assist with parking and direct foot traffic to the event site.
The outdoor festivities will kick off at 8 a.m. There will be Halloween-themed games, giveaways, food, treats, and some scary good surprises. The celebration begins at with outdoor festivities, followed by the ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m.
The flagship store will remain open until 8 p.m., giving visitors plenty of time to admire every animatronic, browse the newest costumes and perhaps leave with a haunted house centerpiece tucked into the back seat.
For a few magical hours, the sounds of seagulls and summer traffic give way to cackling witches, creaking coffins and the unmistakable hiss of fog machines. In South Jersey, Halloween doesn’t wait for the leaves to change. It starts the moment Spirit Halloween unlocks its flagship doors.
