Memorial Day Weekend is Here at Last

From the Editor

Last weekend’s July weather in May was astounding. At first glance, I thought it was Memorial Day weekend. The beaches and the boardwalks were packed.

Beach chairs and umbrellas sprinkled the sand. Balls and frisbees were being tossed through the air. Little ones worked on sandcastles, toting buckets of water up and down the beach. Merchants served up ice cream, pizza, fries, and more. It looked and felt like summer at the Shore.

The unusually warm weather may have passed, but Memorial Day weekend is here. This unofficial start of the summer at the Jersey Shore comes with great fanfare, much of which we haven’t seen for the last two years due to the pandemic.

Five thousand beach balls will be dropped over the Atlantic City Boardwalk, the ocean will be ceremoniously unlocked and business owners will plunge into the ocean in full suits and work attire. Fireworks will explode, Ferris wheels will spin and merchants will be busy to say the least as hundreds of thousands flock to our shores.

2022 is bringing some exciting new developments to South Jersey, from the discovery of a new island formation, to new businesses and entertainment venues. Check out Horseshoe Island on Page 8.

Ventnor is on the move, becoming a hotspot for dining, along with fun, alternative activities to entertain young and old. Read about it in Business Buzz on Pages 28-29.

Atlantic City has added miniature golf and indoor go-kart racing as it continues to diversify its entertainment options.

In Margate, Lucy the Elephant is re-opening for tours this weekend for the first time in nine months. Traditions, old and new, are thriving.

The Chatterbox, Ocean City’s pink landmark building at Ninth St. and Central Ave., has been bought and will be reopening for the season. First opened in 1937, for a brief time, the iconic pink Chatterbox once employed legendary movie star Grace Kelly, who eventually became Princess of Monaco. The new owners have vowed to keep it pink.

Most importantly, Memorial Day is the time to reflect on and honor those who have fought and sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Be sure to check out our schedule of Memorial Day observances throughout the area on Page 16.

An excellent reminder of the true meaning of Memorial Day is “Remembering S/SGT Bernard I. Friedenberg” on Pages 32-33. What this man endured for his country is nothing short of heroic. Like so many veterans who walk anonymously and quietly alongside us in life, Friedenberg’s sacrifices were immense.

As we all get caught up in our daily lives, it’s easy to forget, but we must remember. Memorial Day offers us a pause, a time to reflect and express our gratitude.

Whether you are a year-round, seasonal or weekend resident, you can count on Shore Local Newsmagazine to keep you in the know. We will continue to spotlight the people, places, and events that make our community the place to be this summer.

Enjoy your Memorial Day weekend and God Bless America.

Peace & Love,
Cindy
