Judge Michael Blee rules in favor of 5th Ward council candidate’s case questioning residency of opponent
Maria Lacca, a candidate for the Atlantic City Council in the city’s 5th Ward, has won her election challenge, with Judge Michael Blee ruling today that her opponent in the 2023 election, Councilman Muhammed Zia, does not meet the residency requirement.
“I am delighted to announce that we have emerged victorious in this landmark residency court case,” said Lacca. “The judge delivered a courageous and decisive ruling today, not only in favor of myself but for Atlantic City. This decision underscores our commitment to justice and the well-being of our community.”
Lacca, who has been committed to addressing the challenges that face Atlantic City’s 5th Ward and making the entire city a better place to live, work, and play for everyone, says the ruling “affirms the integrity and resilience of our city.”
“I extend my deepest gratitude to all those who have supported us during this process,” added Lacca. “This victory represents a win and a strong step forward for Atlantic City. I worked tirelessly for the past eight months for this result, and I am ready to move forward to continue fighting the good fight into the 5th Ward special election.”
Lacca will share more details about “this critical special election” as soon as they become available. Building upon her business and entrepreneurial success, including in the realm of real estate, and with an unwavering commitment to enhancing the lives of her city’s residents, Lacca entered politics and public service, running for Atlantic City Council in the city’s 5th Ward in 2023. Bringing a dynamic energy to the usually low-turnout race, through a grassroots door-to-door campaign, she garnered the highest number of votes ever recorded in the 5th Ward contest, uniting a diverse electorate in a collective call for transformative change.
Lacca knows that while Atlantic City’s best days are still ahead, it is contingent upon the leadership of those visionaries who are poised to drive the necessary change.
“I am extremely grateful and proud of this outcome,” added Lacca. “I would like to thank everyone dedicated to building a strong future for Atlantic City. I believe this city has incredible potential and will go on to exceed even its remarkable achievements of the past.”
