Comments from Jane Bokunewicz, faculty director of the Lloyd D. Levenson Institute of Gaming, Hospitality and Tourism (LIGHT), Stockton University School of Business, on the May 2025 numbers released Monday by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement:
A little sunshine and an extra Saturday helped Atlantic City’s casino operators realize the best single month brick-and-mortar gross gaming revenue in the year-to-date and the best May return in recent years.
May 2025’s nearly 11% increase in year-over-year monthly total gross (brick-and-mortar) casino win seems to have helped make up for early year declines. As of April 2025, year-to-date total gross casino win had lagged the same period in 2024 by 2%. As of May 2025, however, that gap seems to have closed with operators exceeding 2024 year-to-date by nearly 1%.
These gains occurred even as the industry celebrated a new record for single-month total gross internet gaming revenue. At $249.5 million, May 2025 surpassed the previous record ($243.9 million) set in March 2025.
Heading into the peak summer season, we can hope to see the resort’s brick-and-mortar gaming operations gain momentum even as internet gaming revenues continue their upward trajectory. Jane Bokunewicz can be reached at jane.bokunewicz@stockton.edu
