Jersey Shore Musicians Podcast; Rhythm & Spirits to Rock in December

Tune In, Turn On
By Doug Deutsch

Let’s say you’re an up-and-coming solo musician or band in the Jersey Shore area and you want to get some attention for your new release or show you’ll be playing?

That’s where the “Jersey Shore Musicians Podcast” comes in.

“Once COVID hit, like most musicians, we got bored because everything stopped,” says Matt Cullen, who along with lifelong friend and fellow Ocean County musician Jeff Kalemba, formed “Jersey Shore Musicians Podcast” in 2020. “We had this idea to do a podcast to help shine a light on local musicians during a very dark time. There were no opportunities out there for local musicians, so we tried to create some for them any way we could.

“So, we started out by bringing in musicians to our studio, talking with them, and even recording live acoustic performances,” Cullen continued. “We have even gone as far as recording an acoustic track for the band Full on Empty, and created a music video for them as well.

“Moving forward to today, we are still doing all of that plus putting together original music showcases at Manafirkin Brewery in Manahawkin (they’re a JSM podcast sponsor) that are solely focused on benefiting the bands. No ticket minimums or greedy promoters, just good times and original music,” says Cullen.

“We have approximately 50 (podcast) episodes posted from all different genres and professions in the music industry. The list keeps growing, and we don’t plan on stopping any time soon! We believe the more we grow, the more we can do for the local scene and local bands.”

Rhythm & Spirits About to Rock: Now comes word that one of Tune In Turn On’s favorite live rooms in Atlantic City, Rhythm & Spirits on Tennessee Avenue in the Orange Loop, will be doing live rock music showcases, thanks to Norstep Productions and Stephen Weiss.

“We’re returning to an indoor stage with local and regional independent bands,” said Weiss, who recently presented 420 lifestyle/music event Dear Summer, Thanks For The Memories at Orange Loop Amphitheater.

“Starting Saturdays in December, Rhythm & Spirits will host original music on their stage that plays out to a crowd of about one hundred. These three-band shows will bring a unique energy to this smaller space,” says Weiss, who used to promote live shows at the now-closed Bourre on New York Avenue (where Cardinal Restaurant is now).

“There’s also an outback outdoor space (at R&S) to chill out away from the music, but the real energy is inside.”

Norstep’s first live event at Rhythm & Spirits takes place Saturday, Dec. 2, and features Pierced, The Age of Ore (pictured above), and Second Half Comeback, while Dec. 9 finds The Goons, Away Game, and Objective Joy Ride performing. All shows start at 8 p.m. and admission is $7. “We plan to keep the music playing all winter long,” he said.

On a side note, they’ve got great food here, too! See for yourself at 129 S. Tennessee Ave.

David Earl Birthday Show@Anchor: One of the mainstays in AC’s rock scene, Anchor Rock Club sound engineer and erstwhile Deejay David Earl, says, “(this Saturday, Nov. 11) come and celebrate my birthday with me (at the Anchor) with a very special 15-year anniversary The David Earl Experience Set. Also playing are some of my favorite bands – Goalkeeper, Sleep Cycles, Ill Rendition, and Millington – and I’ll be closing out the night with a Deejay David Earl Set.” Anchor is located at 247 S. New York Ave.
