Grassroots Volunteers Secure Over 2,000 Petitions to Halt Offshore Wind Project in Atlantic City

In a powerful demonstration of grassroots activism and community engagement, volunteers in Atlantic City have successfully collected over 2,000 signatures from Atlantic City voters to oppose the planned Offshore Wind project set to directly impact the city. The petition reflects the concerns among residents about the project’s potential impact on the city and its neighborhoods.

“Over 2,000 signatures is a clear message that the people of Atlantic City are not willing to accept these changes without a fight,” said Lacca. “This is about standing up for our community, ensuring our voices are heard, and holding decision-makers accountable for their plans.”

The volunteer effort, which involved local residents, activists, and concerned citizens, grew quickly as word spread about the disruptions the project would cause. The petitioners argue that the project, which includes cables connecting wind turbines to the mainland, will disrupt the local environment, impact property values, hurt local businesses, and strain city resources.Councilwoman Lacca has been outspoken in challenging the project, and in particular questioning why the cables for offshore wind energy should be placed in her ward. “If members of our council are in favor of the project, then they should volunteer their streets to get ripped up. Why should these cables go into my ward? My residents and I have sent a message loud and clear: We do not want this disaster waiting to happen. Send Offshores to another ward,” Lacca stated.

Councilwoman Lacca is urging officials to reconsider the location of the project and to explore alternative sites that do not disproportionately impact her ward.

“We need to protect our neighborhoods, our environment, and the well-being of our residents,” she concluded.
