Hospitality is at the heart of South Jersey’s tourism industry, bringing together hotels, restaurants, events and experiences that welcome visitors from near and far. As a professor of hospitality, tourism and event management studies at Stockton University, Donna Albano is helping prepare the next generation of professionals to succeed in this dynamic industry.
Through her teaching and experience, Donna introduces students to the many opportunities within the hospitality industry while encouraging them to view hospitality as a virtue grounded in service, leadership, ethics, respect and a genuine commitment to others. She challenges students to think beyond traditional notions of customer service and consider how thoughtful hospitality can create meaningful connections and memorable experiences. Donna shares her perspective on hospitality education, the evolving tourism industry, and the knowledge, professionalism and human connection that contribute to a successful career in the field.
Here are some excerpts from our Coastal Conversation:
AS: What inspired you to pursue a career in hospitality, and eventually become a professor at Stockton University?
DA: I pursued my undergraduate degree in hospitality management and my educational journey exposed me to passionate, experienced faculty, amazing industry work experiences and a network of scholarships and support that allowed me to pursue my career in numerous aspects of the industry. My love of learning led me to pursue graduate education and ultimately a career in higher education, where I have been able to bring together two of my passions — hospitality and education.
AS: What do you enjoy most about teaching students who are preparing for careers in the hospitality and tourism industry?
DA: Like the hospitality industry, every class is different and so are the students. I enjoy the constant learning curve in order to stay relevant and aware of industry trends and needs.
AS: What are some of the most important skills students need to succeed in today’s hospitality industry?
DA: I could easily rattle off the top skills and competencies employers are seeking in recent college graduates, but I believe that hospitality is a virtue, not just a professional skill. So I try to embed that hospitality is not just a skillset reserved for our industry. It is a human capability. It is how we build connection, foster belonging and create impact in every space we enter.
AS: How has the hospitality and tourism industry changed throughout your career?
DA: It’s been a long career, so I have seen a lot of change! The industry has evolved from a primarily service-focused industry to an experience-driven one. Technology, social media, changing guest expectations and personalization have transformed how businesses engage with guests. However, the human element of hospitality — making people feel welcomed, valued and connected — remains essential.
AS: What opportunities are available to students interested in careers in hospitality, tourism, events or related fields?
DA: The career opportunities in the hospitality and tourism industry are endless. These opportunities extend globally and provide transferable skills that allow students to build careers that last a lifetime.
AS: How important is the hospitality industry to the South Jersey shore and its local economy?
DA: Hospitality and tourism are part of the economic backbone of South Jersey. The industry creates jobs, supports local businesses, attracts visitors and investment, and contributes to the identity and vitality of our communities
AS: Is there a particular student accomplishment or experience from your career as a professor that has made you especially proud?
DA: Stockton’s Hospitality, Tourism and Event Management program has a long list of notable graduates with amazing career trajectories and accomplishments. A strong alumni network is one of the greatest assets of our program. Alumni become mentors, industry partners, guest speakers, internship and employment connections, and ambassadors for the program.
AS: What advice would you give to someone considering a career in hospitality, and what do you see ahead for the industry?
DA: My advice is that the hospitality industry is a dynamic career with many A.I.-proof elements! For those with a passion for business and service there’s no better industry.
