On Monday, January 20th, more than 60 people volunteered to participate in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service at Jewish Family Service of Atlantic & Cape May Counties (JFS). The volunteers included Belhaven Middle School students, Mainland Regional High School National Honor Society students, the New Jersey State Martin Luther King Commissioner for Atlantic County, American Red Cross representatives, Lynn Kramer Village by the Shore members, JFS staff, family, and other supporters.
The group spent the morning putting together 500 snack bags to distribute at Point in Time, an annual statewide count of sheltered and unsheltered people experiencing homelessness on a single night later this month. In addition, the volunteers packed more than 300 toiletry bags of shampoo, conditioner, and soap, 75 food bags, and 115 on-the-go bags with food for people without a full kitchen to prepare meals.
Volunteers also picked up a donation of baked goods and produce from Acme in Ventnor, made an inventory of Kosher meals for deliveries, and decorated a display box for the JFS Margate office so people can drop-off reusable grocery bags to keep an ample supply in the pantry.
We would like to extend a special thanks to the Mays Landing Grocery Outlet for donating nearly 10 cases of Kashi cereal which will be distributed to people in need.
