The five wind turbines in Atlantic City have become a welcoming sight along the drive into Atlantic City. But did you know the turbines create energy for a critical service that keeps our waterways clean?

The Jersey-Atlantic Wind Farm supplies power for the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) Wastewater Treatment Plant, which does the important job of treating wastewater from thousands of residents and visitors before it is safely released into the ocean. This process ensures our waterways are open for recreational swimming, fishing and more.

Curious visitors can stop by every Windsday in July and August for free open house tours of the wind farm and wastewater treatment plant located at 1801 Absecon Blvd. in Atlantic City at 12 noon. Tours last approximately 1 hour, and no reservations are required.

“Visitors are welcome to stop in and learn more about renewable energy and the role it plays in powering our facility,” said ACUA President Matthew DeNafo. “The tours are educational, fun, and something different for visitors to do down the shore.”

Wind Farm Facts:

  • ACUA’s Wastewater Treatment Facility is the largest wind and solar powered water treatment facility in the world.
  • The wind farm is the first commercial development of its kind in the state, as well as the first coastal and urban wind farm in the nation.
  • The wind farm has saved ACUA and its ratepayers more than $7.7 million dollars and prevented nearly 83,000 metric tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.
