Residents who are interested in learning more about arboriculture are invited to attend the 100th annual Shade Tree Federation Conference being held Oct. 16-17 at Harrah’s Resort Conference Center in Atlantic City.

The conference is the premier tree education conference in the state and offers two-days of programming highlighting urban and community forestry. Outstanding speakers will offer insight into tree care, selection and maintenance of trees.

Residents and city employees may attend CORE (Community Representative) training, which includes the basics of tree care. Topics include tree structure, function, identification and jargon, legal issues in urban forestry, and proper tree planting and maintenance. General sessions feature renowned speakers who offer insight into how to create healthier cities through urban forestry.

Those who complete CORE Training are eligible for membership in the city’s Shade Tree Committee now in formation. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) awarded to attendees will provide the city with credits toward continued NJ Urban and Community Forestry certification, which qualifies the city to receive tree planting grants and professional support.

The two-day conference includes hot lunch each day and parking vouchers.

Attendance is $275 per day; however, qualified residents and employees will have their registration fee covered by a NJ Urban & Community Forestry “Leafing Out” education grant awarded to the city for the next three years.

Anyone interested in attending may contact Nanette LoBiondo Galloway at 609-457-2514 or email sustainableehc@eggharborcity.org.  The deadline to register is Sept. 12.
