SustainableEHC, the city’s green team, will hold an Arbor Day Celebration 3-6 p.m. Friday, April 26 at Peace Pilgrim Park, 500-block London Ave.
The event celebrates everything wonderful about trees, including how they beautify the community, provide a habitat for wildlife, provide shade in summer and windbreaks in winter, save homeowners on the cost of energy, and how they clean the air and absorb stormwater.
The event includes a tree giveaway, children’s activities, tree talks, and the Grubbin’ Gringos food truck. Residents will have a chance to meet the city’s new arborist and learn about the four-year tree maintenance plan being funded by the USDA Forestry Program.
SustainableEHC has secured a limited number of trees in 2- to 3-gallon pots for distribution at no cost for residents to plant in their backyards. Information about how to select the proper site for the tree, Call Before You Dig, and properly plant, water, mulch and care for the tree will be presented.
Participants will also be able to register to win a free signed copy of conservationist and New York Times best-selling author Doug Tallamy’s book, “The Nature of Oaks,” which details the benefits of planting New Jersey’s official state tree, the northern red oak.
