The musical narrates the remarkable rags-to-riches story of Cash, beginning with his childhood in the Dirty Thirties in Arkansas, where he worked the fields as the son of Southern Baptist sharecroppers. It follows his gradual rise to fame as a country singer-songwriter, detailing his life on the road, his struggles with alcohol and drugs, and, most importantly, his enduring relationship with country music legend June Carter.
Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash (Small Cast Edition) was created by Richard Maltby, Jr. and William Meade. It was adapted from the Broadway production by Richard Maltby, Jr. and Jason Edwards, with orchestrations by Steven Bishop and Jeff Lisenby, and additional arrangements by David Abbinanti.
