Tune In Turn On
So, this happened.
Your intrepid columnist attended a house concert hosted by local arts supporter Jim Tuohy last weekend and caught a pair of sets by South Jersey favorite Plaid Salmon. The band features a standout horn section led by trumpet player PJ Keiter, trombonist Ricky Roehm and PJ’s brother, Will Keiter, when the latter is not performing with Twisted Livin’.
We’ll feature Plaid Salmon in a future column, but during their set someone mentioned Bonerama, the New Orleans-based group described on its website as “a funky rock band with brass or a funky brass band that rocks.”
Formed in 1998 by trombonists Mark Mullins and Craig Klein, Bonerama has spent more than a quarter-century building a devoted following with its unique blend of New Orleans funk, brass and classic rock influences.
The band returns to South Jersey on Friday, June 19, for a free performance at the Tony Mart Legacy Concerts on the Beach series at William Morrow Beach in Somers Point. Showtime is 7 p.m.
Tony Mart promoter Carmen Marotta says Bonerama’s sound is unlike anything else on the concert circuit.
“Mark Mullins created a truly unique style built around multiple trombones and the rhythms of New Orleans,” Marotta said. “The band combines funk, rock and a second-line street beat into something all its own.”
The current lineup includes Michael Mullins, son of founder Mark Mullins, along with renowned sousaphone player Matt Perrine and a powerhouse horn section that has helped make Bonerama a favorite at festivals and concert venues throughout the country.
Marotta said the band’s blend of classic rock songs and New Orleans brass arrangements has earned a loyal following among Jersey Shore music fans.
If you’ve never experienced Bonerama live, Friday’s beach concert offers the perfect opportunity. Admission is free, and the setting along the bay provides one of the region’s best summer concert experiences.
See you Friday night in Somers Point.
