Beth Israel students celebrate Purim

Sunday School at Beth Israel was filled with festive fun for Purim on March 24. Students made Mishloach Manot baskets which they filled with treats including hamantaschen, fruit and candy. Classes did a creative retelling of the Purim story using puppets and masks. Then everyone gathered for a mini-carnival of games and activities.

Purim is the Spring Jewish holiday based on the Biblical book of Esther, with its story of escape from planned persecution and slaughter. Despite the serious subject, the holiday is celebrated in joy and comedy, often retelling the story in farcical ways or with creative parody.

The largest Reform congregation on the Mainland in South Jersey, Beth Israel is a warm and welcoming home to generations of families who play a vital and integral part in synagogue life. A full-service congregation, Beth Israel welcomes diversity, interfaith families, LGBTQ Jews and partners, Jews of color, and all types of modern Jewish families, wherever they may be found on their personal Jewish journey.
