Former Atlantic Cape Community College Buccaneers Men’s Basketball standout David Coit recently received a full Division I scholarship to the University of Kansas for his senior year.
Coit, who during his 2021-22 freshman year at Atlantic Cape helped lead the resurgent Buccaneers to the 2022 NJCAA Division III Region 19 quarterfinals while also earning Region 19 player of the year and First-Team All-Region honors that year, earned the final roster spot on the 2024-25 Kansas Jayhawks, who play in the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) Big 12 Conference.
Coit’s one and only season at Atlantic Cape was indeed memorable. He became the first Buccaneer to earn First-Team All-American honors while achieving in the classroom and working day-in and day-out to prepare himself for the next collegiate level both athletically and academically.
Atlantic Cape Athletic Director and Men’s Basketball Assistant Coach Jamal Edwards is tremendously proud of all that Coit has accomplished during his first three years of college.
“David receiving a full scholarship to the University of Kansas is a major accomplishment for not only himself, but the Atlantic Cape Buccaneers athletics program as well. This is a big accomplishment for Division III athletics,” said Edwards. “David represents growth and all that can be accomplished if you work hard. It also shows that you can attend a community college and make it anywhere.”
A 5-11, 175-pound rising senior originally from Columbus, NJ, Coit spent his sophomore and junior seasons at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois with the Huskies. He earned Third-Team All-MAC honors for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons. He finished third in conference scoring last season by averaging 20.8 points per game on 41.6% shooting and 33.7% from three-point range.
As a sophomore in 2022-23, Coit averaged 15.5 points-per-game while shooting 37.7% from beyond the arc. During his two-year Division I career, Coit is shooting 87.9% from the free throw line. Coit has also excelled against high-major competition, averaging 17 points-per-game against those opponents over the last two years, including a 34-point effort against the DePaul Blue Demons last season.
In an interview with www.247sports.com, Coit stated that “Kansas was the best situation for me. Head Coach Bill Self trusts in me, and trusts my ability to come in, make plays and score. He was honest with me from the start. He recruited me months ago before the summer. He was always transparent about what he was looking for and his coaching staff was the same way.”
Coit and his new Jayhawk teammates begin their 2024-25 season with an exhibition against the Washburn Ichabods on October 29, followed by the regular-season opener against the Howard Bison on November 4.
