Funds to help provide free screening mammograms for women in Atlantic County on the Dr. Jan Astin Mobile Digital Mammography Van
The Atlantic City Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. recently donated $5,000 to the AMI Foundation’s Dr. Jan Astin Mobile Digital Mammography Van. The funds will be used to help provide free screening mammograms for women in Atlantic County.
“We are very grateful to Delta Sigma Theta for their thoughtful gesture and valuable contribution to this very worthy cause,” said AMI CEO Dr. David Levi. “The mammography van provides screenings to more than 1,000 women in New Jersey each year, many of whom are uninsured or underinsured. These donations help us fulfill our mission and provide these women with potentially life-saving low cost or no cost mammograms.”
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a private, not-for-profit organization founded in 1913 by 22 women at Howard University, in Washington D.C. Celebrating over 111 years of service, scholarship and sisterhood, the Sorority has distinguished itself as a public service organization through its Five-Point Programmatic Thrusts. Since its founding more than 300,000 women have joined the organization.
The Atlantic City Alumnae Chapter, a local chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., was chartered on July 28, 1979 and has continued the national mission and vision through an extensive array of public service projects and programs to promote human welfare in Atlantic and Capy May counties, through scholarships, educational development, social justice, mental health and wellness initiatives, public safety, food insecurity, black maternal health, antiviolence against women and girls, financial wellness, political awareness and involvement and promoting education locally and in Africa. The chapter has also awarded more than $200,000 in scholarships to college bound high school seniors in Atlantic and Cape May counties.
One such program is the bi-annual Breast Cancer Memorial Brunch held on October 21, 2023, to honor women who are survivors of breast cancer, as well as memorialize the women who have succumbed to it and other cancers. Proceeds from this event benefitted the Dr. Jan Astin Mobile Digital Mammography Van to help save a life so “we can continue to celebrate life.” The Atlantic City Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. continues to show their dedication to preventing breast cancer as they donated $5,000 to the Dr. Jan Astin Mobile Digital Mammography Van in 2019.
