While many visitors come to South Jersey for its beaches and boardwalks, others seek a quieter retreat. Birch Grove Park in Northfield offers a peaceful alternative, with wooded trails, open spaces and a rich local history.

Located at 1675 Burton Ave., the 271-acre park features hiking and biking trails, picnic areas, a playground and the historic Casto House Museum. Once home to a brickworks and later a campground, the property has evolved into one of Atlantic County’s premier outdoor recreation destinations.

The park is open year-round from dawn to dusk, and admission is free.

Visitors can explore miles of shaded trails, enjoy community events and learn about the area’s past. Free summer concerts, historical exhibits and scenic natural surroundings attract residents and visitors throughout the year.

For those vacationing at the shore, Birch Grove Park is conveniently located about 15 minutes from Atlantic City and less than 20 minutes from Ocean City. Groups of 10 or more are welcome with advance notice.

A highlight of the park is the Casto House Museum, which is open Sundays and Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m., and by appointment. The museum preserves the history of the community once known as Bakersville and showcases nearly 200 years of local heritage.

Exhibits explore the area’s agricultural, maritime and shipbuilding roots while tracing its growth into the community it is today. Displays include artifacts from homes, schools, businesses, churches and civic organizations, along with collections featuring fashion, sports, toys and everyday life.

Summer is among the busiest seasons at Birch Grove Park. Families gather for picnics, birthday parties, reunions and cookouts, while children enjoy the playground and open spaces. The park’s bandstand hosts free concerts that bring residents together for evenings of live music in a relaxed outdoor setting.

Nature enthusiasts can often spot birds, turtles and other wildlife throughout the park. Its 21 man-made ponds and lakes add to the scenic landscape and provide opportunities for observation and photography.

The park also serves as a popular destination for exercise and wellness. Walkers, joggers and cyclists regularly use the trails, particularly during the cooler morning and evening hours. The natural setting offers a welcome escape from the crowds often associated with the summer season at the shore.

As temperatures rise across South Jersey, Birch Grove Park continues to provide residents and visitors with opportunities for recreation, relaxation and a connection to local history. Its blend of natural beauty, outdoor activities and educational experiences has made it a valued community resource for generations.

Swimming, boating, camping and pets, except for service animals, are prohibited within the park.
