You’re probably familiar with the saying that the best things in life are free. For instance, love, friendship, and health are invaluable aspects of our lives. They increase in value as time passes. Love grows deeper, friendships stand the test of time, and our health becomes increasingly more important with each passing year. With time and a collection of life experiences, you begin to realize that no matter what’s in your bank account, what kind of car you drive or title you hold, your health is the most valuable asset of all.
I used to believe that my health was purely physical. As long as my muscular and skeletal systems were functioning well and my organs were doing their job, then I considered myself pretty healthy. I now realize it’s so much more than that. Although physical health is still incredibly important, our mind, spirit and social well-being are critical components to our overall health as well.
For me, taking care of those other aspects of my health usually involves calming my mind by finding my way back to my yoga mat. It is too easy to get lost in the busyness of life. Committing to carving out one hour a day for myself where I am not working or caregiving allows me the space I need to feel balanced.
January is the time of year many of us take stock of our health and identify some ways we can improve our well-being. This issue of Shore Local contains a special section dedicated to health and wellness. Our community is filled with individuals and business owners that have dedicated their lives to helping others gain better health.
Check out the exciting articles in this issue featuring the people, places and events that make South Jersey an amazing place to live all year-round. Young’s Skating Center celebrates 50 years in business. Read about the historical roots of this family-owned establishment on page 10-11. Mara Justine is back from her star-studded television appearances on “The Voice” competition. See what’s next for Galloway’s star on page 6.
There’s something about living near the shoreline that makes life extra special. Maybe it’s the salt air, the sights and sounds of crashing surf or the squishing of sand under our feet. This week we got a glimpse of snow on the beach and boardwalk for the first time in two years. And we may be getting more soon!
Winter may not be my favorite time of the year, but I recognize there is beauty in it. The most beautiful thing about living in New Jersey is experiencing the gifts of all four seasons. So, until my toes are back in the sand, I will find joy in the little moments. Soon, the days get a little longer and the air will get warmer as winter gives way to spring. Until then, wishing you warmth and good health.
Peace & Love,
Cindy
