An Egg Harbor Township man was hospitalized with serious injuries after being struck by a township police vehicle Wednesday night, authorities said.

The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the collision, which occurred at approximately 8:41 p.m. Oct. 21 on Ocean Heights Avenue between Zion and Steelmanville roads.

William Hirst, 55, of Egg Harbor Township, was struck by a police vehicle operated by Officer Alexandros Doukopoulos, according to information provided by Egg Harbor Township Police Chief Frederick Spano and reported by WPG Talk Radio and BreakingAC.

Doukopoulos provided first aid to Hirst at the scene until emergency medical personnel and paramedics arrived. Hirst was then transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s Atlantic City Campus for advanced care.

Authorities have not publicly released an update on Hirst’s condition since the crash.

Officials also have not disclosed whether Doukopoulos was responding to a call when the crash occurred. Information about the vehicle’s speed, the conditions along the roadway and the circumstances leading to the collision has not been made public.

Spano said the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office is handling the investigation and referred all further questions about the crash to that agency.
