When it comes to historic restaurants in Atlantic City, Angelo’s Fairmount Tavern has earned its place among the city’s longtime favorites. Located in the Ducktown section of the city, the restaurant has been serving generations of diners since 1935, building a reputation for classic Italian cuisine, welcoming hospitality, and an atmosphere that reflects Atlantic City’s rich history.
During a recent drive through the city, we wanted something different from the familiar casino restaurants, buffets and national chains. We were looking for a place with character, somewhere that felt personal, comfortable, and reminiscent of home. Angelo’s Fairmount Tavern was the perfect fit.
The menu features Italian-American favorites, including chicken Parmesan, pasta with meatballs and flounder Francaise, alongside seafood and steak dishes that offer something for a variety of tastes.
We began our meal with the sautéed mussels in marinara, a dish that has become a personal favorite. Served in a steaming bowl piled high with mussels and topped with rich marinara sauce, it was every bit as satisfying as expected. The mussels were tender and flavorful, and the sauce was too good to leave behind. Fortunately, our server brought extra bread, allowing us to soak up every last bit.
For my entrée, I chose the stuffed flounder, a seafood dish that stood out from others I’ve tried. The delicate, flaky fish was wrapped around a generous portion of golden crab imperial, creating a rich combination of flavors. A side of mixed vegetables rounded out the meal.
My husband ordered the T-bone steak special, which arrived cooked to perfection and topped with portobello mushrooms and grilled shrimp. Steak sauce and roasted red peppers added another layer of flavor, while crispy potatoes completed the plate.

No dinner would be complete without dessert, and the cookie butter tiramisu was a memorable way to finish the meal. Light and fluffy, it delivered the rich, unmistakable flavor of Biscoff cookie butter in every bite.
While waiting for the check, we took time to appreciate the restaurant’s surroundings. Atlantic City memorabilia and references to the city’s musical past decorate the space, while wood accents and historic architectural details contribute to its old-school charm. Even the walk to the restroom feels like stepping into another era, with details that evoke the atmosphere of a traditional Italian establishment.
All the while, the music of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin played overhead, adding to the feeling that we were transported to “the good ol’ days.”
Angelo’s Fairmount Tavern offers more than a neighborhood bar or Italian restaurant. It provides a connection to an earlier era of Atlantic City, when familiar faces, hearty meals, lively music and attentive service helped define a night out.
Nearly a century after its founding, Angelo’s continues to bring those elements together, giving longtime patrons and first-time visitors alike a chance to experience a different side of Atlantic City. One plate of classic comfort food at a time.
