Letter from the editor
Fall officially arrived this week. Cooler mornings have returned, mums are adding bursts of color to front porches, and our calendars are filling with festivals, football games and all the traditions that make this season special.
The familiar rhythm of fall is comforting, but a new season also reminds us that change can be exciting. It offers a chance to look at our lives with fresh eyes and ask: What’s new?
When we are young, new experiences find us. A new grade, teacher, team or activity arrives whether we are ready or not.
As adults, we often work toward the opposite. We build careers, homes, relationships and routines that give us stability. There is value in that. Predictability is easy and knowing what to expect can feel reassuring. But if we become too comfortable, we may stop noticing the possibilities and opportunities around us.
Recently, I spoke with a young woman in her 20s about the future and how different life feels when so much remains unknown.
“You’re lucky because you already know what your life will be like, where you will live and what you will be doing,” she told me. “Everything in my life is a big unknown.”
I understood what she meant. I remember looking ahead at her age and wondering where life would take me. The uncertainty was intimidating, but it was also exhilarating. The future was wide open, and there were so many directions I could go.
A part of me still longs for that feeling. The good news is that opportunity does not disappear as we grow older. We may have more responsibilities, but we can still choose to try something new. It does not have to mean leaving a job, moving away or reinventing our lives.
It can begin with something small: opening a new book, taking a class, learning a skill, attending a community event or visiting a place we have never explored. It might mean introducing ourselves to someone, accepting an invitation or beginning a project we have talked about.
Sometimes, one step outside our comfort zone leads somewhere we never expected. A conversation becomes a friendship. A hobby uncovers a talent. An unfamiliar experience gives us confidence we did not know we had. Those moments keep life dynamic. I love meeting people, hearing their stories and learning new things. It takes me to new places in body and mind.
Of course, we all face constraints. Time, money, health, responsibilities and fear can narrow our choices. We cannot control every circumstance, but we can remain curious. We can continue looking for the open door, even when it is not the one we expected.
Change can be challenging, but it can also bring growth, friendship, purpose and unexpected joy. New experiences remind us that we are still learning and our stories are still being written.
Still water becomes stagnant, while moving water stays fresh. I think people are much the same. We are meant to keep moving, growing and becoming.
So, what’s new with you? As fall begins, I hope we all say yes to something that excites us, brings us happiness or opens our world a little wider. A new season is here, and there is so much to look forward to.
Peace & Love, Cindy
