My personal favorite, and one I have loved for years, is the plain donut.

Sometimes, the classic really is the best choice.
Just a few blocks away, Oves on Fourth Street offers its own longtime tradition and a friendly rivalry with Brown’s.
Like Brown’s, Oves is known for its fresh donuts and the lines that form outside on busy summer mornings. It is easy to understand why once you get close enough to smell them.
Oves has a variety of donuts, but one of its iconic options is the Apple Cider Donut.
Even though apple cider donuts are often associated with fall, I think they deserve some attention in the middle of summer, too.
The apple cider donut has a nice balance of sweetness and a subtle cinnamon flavor. The inside is warm and soft, while the outside has a light, crisp texture that gives it the perfect contrast.
It is a different experience from a traditional glazed or frosted donut, but that is part of what makes it worth trying.
If you are having trouble choosing between Brown’s and Oves, you may just have to try both.
While Brown’s and Oves are Boardwalk destinations, one donut stop worth making if you are willing to venture into downtown Ocean City is Fractured Prune.
Located on 12th Street and Asbury Avenue, Fractured Prune is a little farther from the Boardwalk but well worth the detour for anyone looking for something different.
The shop takes an artisan approach to donuts and is not shy about having fun with its menu. There are colorful toppings, different combinations, and freshly made donuts that are almost as fun to look at as they are to eat.
The purple prune mascot greets customers with a big grin, adding to the playful atmosphere.
Fractured Prune is also a good choice if you want something beyond the traditional donut shop experience. The shop offers creative lattes alongside its donuts, making it an easy stop for a full morning treat.
The presentation is part of the experience, but the donuts still have to deliver — and the freshly made treats do just that.
Heading towards the South end of Ocean City, Nauti Donuts, located across from Uncle Bill’s Pancake House on 24th Street, offers another fun option.
The location itself makes it easy to turn breakfast into a little morning food crawl. You can grab pancakes across the street or head to Nauti Donuts for something sweet.
What I have always liked about Nauti Donuts is how much it feels like you are customizing your own donut.
You can choose your frosting and toppings and create a combination that fits exactly what you are craving. If you are an Oreo or cookie lover like me, you can add those kinds of toppings to your donut. There are also fun options such as cereal and other toppings that let you get creative.
There is something fun about being able to build your own donut. Instead of simply choosing from a case of finished options, you get to decide what goes on top. And when it comes to a summer morning treat, sometimes more is more.
Mallon’s is another Ocean City bakery that deserves a mention. The bakery may be especially well-known for its sticky buns and crumb cake, but its donuts are also worth trying. With locations on 14th Street and 55th Street, Mallon’s is convenient for both locals and visitors throughout town.
Its donuts include classic options such as chocolate and sprinkle-covered varieties. Like its other baked goods, the donuts are fresh and sweet, making them an easy addition to a morning coffee run.
If you are already stopping at Mallon’s for a sticky bun or crumb cake, adding a donut to the order may be the right decision.
There is a reason donuts have become such a recognizable part of an Ocean City morning.
It is not just about the food. It is the experience surrounding it.
It is waking up early and heading toward the Boardwalk before the day gets too hot.
