Within the home of Marmora resident Joe McAfee sits a unique treasure trove of memorabilia. The longtime firefighter has amassed a collection of patches, photographs and toy fire trucks, including a replica of Fire Station 51 from the 1970s television series “Emergency!” But the most impressive feature is the more than 4,000 ceramic mugs on display, each representing a different fire company in New Jersey. The collection has grown for more than 40 years, earning McAfee the nickname “Mugsy.”
Each mug features a custom design commemorating the purchase of new firefighting equipment, milestone anniversaries or other significant events in a fire company’s history. According to McAfee, many of the mugs were purchased online.
“I just go on eBay, or if there’s a firehouse and I ask if they have ceramic mugs, they may come out with a box … maybe two or three,” he said.
McAfee began collecting firehouse mugs at age 14, purchasing the popular souvenirs from stations throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He eventually sold half of his collection and now focuses exclusively on collecting mugs from each of New Jersey’s 21 counties. He shared some of the most notable pieces in his collection.
The mugs are displayed in one of 38 custom-built cabinets. Each 10-foot cabinet holds between 100 and 200 mugs. The display was designed and built by McAfee’s uncle, George Walter.
“He came down for three days and laid out the design,” McAfee said.
His extensive collection has attracted the attention of fellow firefighters.
“They came over and looked at it. They were surprised and never saw so many,” he said.
McAfee has been a member of the Marmora Volunteer Fire Company since 1989 and has represented the township at parades and conventions throughout the years. In 2023, he received the Carl Madden Lifetime Service Award for his dedication to public service.
“We have over 40 active members, and Joe is one of our most reliable,” Fire Chief Jay Newman said in a press release. “He can be counted on to assist at fire scenes as well as help keep the firehouse and equipment clean.”
When he is not volunteering with the fire company, McAfee also devotes his time to Able Acres Farm, where he helps deliver and pick up supplies. The family-run farm in Estell Manor provides opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
Today, the collection continues to grow, attracting interest from firefighters across New Jersey. McAfee is still searching for 19 more mugs to complete the set. Anyone interested in learning more or contributing to the collection may email him at mcafeemail@comcast.net.
