For years, Squares and Fare in Somers Point felt like South Jersey’s best-kept secret. It wasn’t the kind of pizza shop you could simply stop by on your way home. If you knew, you knew. Customers eagerly followed the business on social media, waiting for the next pizza drop and hoping they could claim one before they sold out. Getting your hands on one of their famous pies almost felt like winning the lottery.

As someone who had been hearing the hype for years, I couldn’t help but wonder what made this pizza so special. Every time another photo popped up on social media, I found myself thinking, One day, I’m going to try it.

Thankfully, that day has finally arrived, especially since they have a storefront in Somers Point next to the famous Charlie’s Bar.

No more setting reminders or racing through Facebook comments hoping to reserve a pizza. Today, you can simply walk into their cozy Somers Point shop, where you’re greeted by friendly faces, the smell of fresh dough baking in the oven, and a chalkboard menu filled with that day’s specialty slices.

Of course, I couldn’t settle for just one.

We sampled four different specialty slices before taking home a traditional pie to enjoy later that evening. Every slice shared the same incredible foundation: a light, airy crust with just the right amount of crunch, topped with fresh ingredients that packed every bite with flavor.

The standout of the day was undoubtedly the Black Truffle slice. Made with creamy vodka sauce, mozzarella, burrata, and finished with black truffle oil, it was rich without being overwhelming. The combination of the silky vodka sauce and earthy truffle created a slice that felt both comforting and elevated. It was one of those pizzas you immediately start planning to order again.

Next was the Verdissimo, a white pizza topped with mozzarella, roasted garlic Locatelli cream, spinach, artichoke hearts, and a touch of lemon zest. The roasted garlic cream gave it a deep, savory flavor while the lemon added just enough brightness to balance everything out. It’s the perfect choice for anyone who loves a fresh, vegetable-forward slice.

Then came the classic Pepperoni. While pepperoni pizza is often loaded with grease, this one was refreshingly different. The small pepperoni cups crisped beautifully in the oven, adding just the right amount of crunch without leaving the slice swimming in oil. It’s simple, classic, and incredibly satisfying.

Finally, we tried the White with Burrata. Sometimes less really is more. Creamy cheese, a perfectly baked crust, and a generous dollop of fresh burrata created a slice that let quality ingredients speak for themselves.

One of the best parts of the visit was watching the pizzas come together right in front of us. Fresh ingredients were carefully layered onto each pie before sliding into the oven. Just minutes later, a bubbling hot pizza emerged, and employee Nathan Rivera wasted no time showering it with freshly grated Parmesan. Oh, and fresh basil, literally the plant sitting in its pot on the counter, is added to the top of the traditional pie.

“We have the best pizza around,” Rivera said with a smile. “The Black Truffle is my favorite.”

Naturally, I had to ask if there was a secret ingredient behind all the hype. He just laughed and kept the secret to himself. Maybe that’s exactly how it should be.

What started as a small, home-based operation with a devoted online following has grown into one of Somers Point’s most talked-about pizza destinations. Despite the move into a storefront, Squares and Fare has held onto the passion and attention to detail that made locals fall in love with it in the first place. Some places become popular because of social media. Others earn their reputation one slice at a time.

After finally experiencing Squares and Fare for myself, I can confidently say this wasn’t just internet hype. From the perfectly baked crust to the fresh toppings and welcoming atmosphere, every bite lived up to the years of anticipation.

The secret may be out now, but one thing hasn’t changed: Squares and Fare is absolutely worth the wait.
