For many South Jersey residents and visitors, a trip to the shore isn’t complete without the whole family, including our four-legged companions. While many beaches restrict dogs during peak summer months, a growing number of destinations, attractions, and businesses across the coast are rolling out the welcome mat for pups and their people.
Beach days with your best friend
It’s important to note that across New Jersey, most ocean beaches limit dogs during the summer season, typically allowing them only during early morning, evening, or off-season months. There are some exceptions, if you know where to look!
In Brigantine, the natural beauty of North Brigantine Beach—typically referred to as the North End—provides a quieter, less crowded setting where leashed dogs are welcome, especially during off-peak hours. It’s a favorite for sunrise walks and dolphin spotting.
Malibu Beach in Longport (often called Dog Beach) is another go-to spot for locals and their pups. The bayfront setting creates calmer waters, making it ideal for dogs who prefer a gentle splash over crashing waves.
Further south, Wildwood has embraced its pet-loving reputation with the dedicated Wildwood Dog Beach, a stretch of sand complete with a fenced dog park and plenty of room to roam. It’s one of the few places where dogs can truly enjoy the beach atmosphere in-season.
Nature trails and historic charm
The sprawling Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in Galloway features miles of trails and observation areas where visitors can explore salt marshes, spot migratory birds, and enjoy peaceful walks alongside their leashed pets.
For a step back in time, Batsto Village in the Pine Barrens offers a unique mix of history and nature. Dogs are welcome on the grounds, where visitors can stroll past preserved 18th- and 19th-century buildings, wooded paths, and scenic waterways.
On the water and above it all
Adventure-seeking dog owners can even take their pets out to sea. Cape May Whale Watcher offers pet-friendly cruises where leashed dogs can join their owners in search of dolphins and whales off the coast. Imagine Fido’s face when he sees a seal!
Back on land, the iconic Absecon Lighthouse—New Jersey’s tallest lighthouse—welcomes dogs on its grounds, allowing visitors to soak in history and panoramic views of Atlantic City.
Pet-friendly places to stay
Turning a day trip into a full getaway is easier than ever with dog-friendly accommodations across the shore.
In Wildwood, the retro-chic The Sandbox Motel caters to pet owners with a relaxed, beachy vibe and welcoming policies. Doggy guests receive a treat, food mat, and bowls to use during their stay, and rooms have hardwood floors for easy cleanup. There’s a pet relief area on the property, or you can take an evening stroll to the nearby beach.
In Atlantic City, Showboat Hotel stands out as one of the most pet-friendly resorts in Atlantic County, offering designated pet areas and easy access to the boardwalk.
If you are headed down to Cape May, check out the Highland House, built in 1850. It’s an ultra pet-friendly B&B. The innkeepers are major dog lovers, and all of the rooms are decorated with canine-themed ornaments. Spend an afternoon lounging on the quaint, expansive front porch, walk four blocks to the beach, or let Rover play with the other pet guests in the fenced yard.
Dining with your dog
After a day in the sun, several restaurants offer outdoor seating where dogs are welcome to join.
In Atlantic City, Tun Tavern pairs classic American fare with a dog-friendly patio atmosphere with a special dog menu. Furry friends can enjoy items like No Bones About It (grilled chicken with rice) and Pup’s Delight (Angus beef and white rice).
Down in Wildwood, Dogtooth Bar and Grill is known for its casual vibe and pet-friendly outdoor seating. It’s a short walk away from the Wildwood Dog Beach, so your dog can play after chow time.
Whale Tale Brewing Company is a pet-friendly brewery celebrating the coastal vibes of Cape May. Relax alongside your fury baby as you listen to live music, grab a bite from a food truck and sample a craft ale. Pups are welcome inside or at one of the outdoor umbrella-shaded tables.
A growing trend in the tourism industry
As more travelers seek pet-friendly experiences, the Jersey Shore continues to adapt.
North Jersey, particularly Asbury Park, boasts an entire industry sector dedicated to dog-loving residents and visitors. As canines continue to garner affection on a national level, more and more pet-friendly offerings are down the pipeline.
Still, responsible pet ownership remains key. Keeping dogs leashed where required, cleaning up after them, and respecting wildlife habitats ensures these spaces remain open and enjoyable for everyone.
In 2026, the message is clear: at the Jersey Shore, there’s no need to leave your best friend behind.
