Tune In, Turn On

A.C. is still basking in the glow of the over 50,000 attendees for last weekend’s Atlantic City St. Patrick’s Parade, which featured an array of fine musical talent.

There was the Irish group The Flynns performing, naturally, Irish-themed tunes atop the Dougherty Restaurants Group Float, with a huge after-party at one of their properties, The Knife and Fork. There was also the “Moo-Rockers” Red Meat Conspiracy aboard the Anchor Rock Club float, with a great after-party concert by Pogues tribute group, Bar Dust.

But as the saying goes, there’s much more to come. Check out some of the fine musical headliners in town at the casinos this weekend.

John Oates/Music Box, Borgata Casino Hotel, March 13: Though John Oates is marking 25 years as a solo recording artist with the release of his self-titled album, “Oates,” it’s still sad not seeing his now-estranged musical partner, Daryl Hall, on the same stage as Oates

The two musicians officially split up in 2023 following their last performance together in 2022, after a star-studded 50-year partnership. Having seen Hall as a live solo act last summer, I can tell you here that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts – in other words, they’re better as a duo than as solo artists.

That being said, Oates will surely dig deep into the Hall and Oates songbook – “Sara Smile,” “Maneater,” “Out Of Touch,” “She’s Gone” – as well as playing tunes from his solo records.

Oates is a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, as well as a recipient of the BMI Icon Award. His career has also been recognized with multiple American Music, MTV and Grammy award nominations.

I still hope Hall and Oates get back together someday.

Mammoth WVH /Tropicana Showroom, March 13: Mammoth WVH is the rock group fronted by Wolfgang Van Halen, guitarist-vocalist and son of the late, great Eddie Van Halen.

Wolfgang played the 600-seat Anchor Rock Club last May but I was unable to attend. This time the younger Van Halen moves into the larger, 2,000-seat Tropicana Showroom, part of the group’s 19-date The End tour. If you dig hard-rockin’ guitar, this one’s for you.

My Generation Tour Featuring The Lovin’ Spoonful, Gary Lewis & The Playboys, and The Hollies, Circus Maximus, Caesars Hotel & Casino, March 14: This ’60s-era nostalgic tour is aimed squarely at the Baby Boomer generation.

The Lovin’ Spoonful had such mega-hits as “Summer In The City,” “Nashville Cats” and “Do You Believe in Magic.” Gary Lewis and the Playboys brought the world memorable songs like “This Diamond Ring” and “Everybody Loves A Clown.” English popsters The Hollies brought the world such memorable hits as “Long, Cool Woman,” “Bus Stop,” “Carrie Anne,” “The Air That I Breathe” and more.

There’s a slew of hits to be heard between these three acts. If you favor sounds from the past, this show is definitely up your musical alley.

Next week we interview: New Jersey rocker Anthony Krizan, onetime guitarist with The Spin Doctors, frequent performer with the Billy Walton Band and successful music producer. His latest: producing and performing on critically-acclaimed album “My Mississippi Roots” by blues man James “JB” Barnes. Kirzan plays the Garden State Live! series at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino’s Sound Waves Theater on Friday, March 20.
