Real Estate Matters

No matter where you live, or in what type of home you live in, there is an excitement about “decking the halls” for the holiday season.

Even if you don’t choose to deck halls with “boughs of holly,” there are many different things you can do to achieve the look you want.

Plan ahead: Choose your color palette

If you don’t get a jumpstart on planning your holiday decor, you may quickly find that items or colors you want are out of stock.

Which two colors make you think of Christmas? If you answered “red and green,” congratulations; you and just about everyone else answered the same. The same would apply if you chose blue, white, silver and gold for Hanukkah.

It’s alright if you love the classic holiday color combinations, as they are awesome, but don’t hesitate to add a splash of complementary color here and there; or, if you are feeling daring, go for a completely different look, like a monochromatic pink palette, or even a red, white and blue military theme. If you can dream it, you can create it.

Bring the outside in and make scents of it

The smell of pine from a real tree. Twigs, pine cones and even wood as accessory pieces in places like your living room or dining room often evoke thoughts of celebrating the holidays. If you have a fireplace or woodstove, this theme will work well.

With the aromas of cranberry, vanilla and peppermint, this time of year can be so delicious — work it to your best advantage. If possible, put natural items, like pine cones or peppermint leaves in a bowl or jar or cinnamon sticks to create a do-it-yourself potpourri of your own liking.

First impression doorway

One of the first things people see when they walk into your home is a doorway leading from one room into another, often through a hallway. Make your first impression eye-catching by framing your doorways with lights or greeting cards attached to a green garland. Choose to have it match the rest of your surrounding decor.

Be inspired

Emphasize your style; consider personalizing your overall aesthetic by adding a do-it-yourself craft such as a homemade garland here and there, to display your personal touches.

Here is a fun way to take personalization to the max: Purchase a meaningful ornament every year while on vacation or during memorable life events. Your tree will become a treasure trove of memories.

The holiday season is one of the best times of year to transform your home, both inside and out. It is up to you to be inspired to achieve your own memorable look for everyone to love, enjoy and treasure together, now and for many years to come.

Remember our veterans

As we begin the month of November, and we take part in all of the enjoyable fall activities and Shore Local events with family and friends, be sure to thank a veteran for his or her service this Veterans Day.

Let’s remember this week to honor and thank all of our veterans, past and present, on Tuesday, Nov. 11, and every day, for their dedication and sacrifices that they make and have made for all of us because freedom is not free.

God bless them all and their families, and God bless the United States of America.
