Weist Barron Ryan: More than an Acting Studio

By Steffen Klenk

Weist Barron Ryan is credited as the oldest school for on-camera acting in the United States. Since its inception in 1956, they have introduced the world to some of the most famed talent, from well-known Hollywood celebrities like Seth Green to Friends actress Courtney Cox. But did you know that they have worked with average individuals?

Originally formed in New York City by actors Dwight Weist and Bob Barron, Weist Barron Acting Studios opened in Philadelphia in 1970 by Ursula Ryan, a former native of Frankfort, Germany.  Ursula was a radio announcer for the American Forces Network (AFN). As the casino and entertainment industry went through a re-growth, famed vocal coach Sal Dupree convinced Ryan to move her acting school to Atlantic City. As a result, more individuals have since obtained quality training and instruction without traveling into the city.

That move more than 40 years ago has worked very well for the local film and entertainment industry. Since the studio’s arrival in South Jersey, over a dozen films have been shot throughout the region, including Ocean’s Eleven, Sex and the City, The Nanny, Warrior and The Rounders, just to name a few.

A wall of headshots.

In November 2019, production commenced on a new Halle Berry movie, Bruised, shot entirely in Atlantic City. More than 800 roles for the film were cast over a series of five days, and millions of dollars were pumped into the local economy. Quinn Showell, who was hired as the film’s Casting Director, describes the experience, “It was my biggest project to date.” Bruised, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last September, is set to debut on Netflix later this calendar year.

Showell also worked as a Casting Director for the Lifetime original feature Death Saved My Life. The movie, starring Megan Good, was shot in various locations throughout the state last November. Showell talks about working under the challenges of COVID-19. “Going in a project like this, you expect road blocks to get in the way, and my job was to figure out how to get over those roadblocks”

According to Showell, the sense of camaraderie and teamwork behind-the-scenes made the filming a success. “It really does take all departments coming together and giving it their all.” Death Saved My Life will make its television debut Saturday, February 13th at 8pm.

While the acting studio’s most notable alumni consist of on-screen actors, they service many clients from businesspeople to realtors, Miss New Jersey title holders, teachers and politicians, many of whom have taken classes to sharpen their public speaking skills and become competitive in their respective industries. According to Stefanie Ryan, the time of social distancing has created the perfect opportunity for people to consider taking a class. “It’s more important than ever to nurture that piece of us that separates us from each other.”

And there is plenty of optimism about the future of filmmaking in South Jersey. Last year, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy extended the state’s film tax credit program through 2028. Films that are shot in the southern half of the state can apply for 35% savings on their expenses, which is welcome news at Weist Barron Ryan. “For people that are now looking for a new career, this is the one to get into,” Ryan states.

What once started inside a small Atlantic City building has recently grown. Last March, prior to the state shutdown, the WBR team settled in their new location in Galloway. The building, just off of New York Avenue, includes two full-functioning studios, an audition room and voice-over booth. The office is equipped with the latest technology to handle remote casting calls and virtual sessions. With a staff of experienced, working actors and a family oriented approach, everyone is at the top of their game.

Upon walking the halls of Weist Barron Ryan in Galloway, the first thing people will notice along the walls are the many headshots. The faces that fill those walls represent the alumni that have taken workshops over the years. From the most well-known actors to local businesspeople, politicians and paegeant contestants, Weist Barron Ryan is a name synonymous with South Jersey residents and national superstars alike.
