Toys for Kids Program Facing High Demand Due to Pandemic

By Cindy Christy Fertsch

Atlantic County Toys for Kids Program has been providing toys to children in our area for over 35 years. The organization was founded by retired Sgt. Greg DePiano who wholeheartedly believes every child should have the opportunity to open a gift on Christmas morning if that’s what their family celebrates.

“More people are struggling this year because of the pandemic. We had to make some hard decisions in order to keep people safe” shared Atlantic County Toys for Kids Program Events Coordinator, Michelle Stella Riordan. “One of the biggest changes is that we are giving to organizations such as non-profit groups and churches rather than to individual families. Then those organizations distribute directly to the families that are in need.”

Atlantic County Toys for Kids is facing high need with reduced collection sites and the cancelation of major fundraising events such as the annual Longport, Margate and Ventnor Police and Fire Department’s “Fill a Cruiser” event.  New, unwrapped toys are collected in drop boxes throughout Atlantic County leading up to the holiday season. But this year, business owners are more hesitant to place a donation box in their business due to safety concerns. However, 15 collection boxes are at various locations in the community. You can find a list of locations on their website toysforkidsprogram.org

Generous sponsors along with teamwork make this program a success every year. The Ventnor Plaza donates the store front  space so toys can be sorted and then shopped for as schools, churches, and other organizations come in to pick out toys for the children on their lists. Toys are separated by age groups and gender throughout the warehouse in Ventnor Plaza. The program is designed for children ages 0-10 however, for families with special needs children, there is no age limit.

Other corporate sponsors that make the Toys For Kids Program possible include Walmart, Manco & Manco Pizza, Atlantic City Cruises, Equity Communications (WAYV), and The Gutter Guys.

The need is great this year. Riordan and her son have been spending their Saturdays collecting change in front of Walmart to help ensure that all children receive a gift this holiday season. If you would like to make a donation to Atlantic County Toys for Kids Program you can send a check to P.O. Box 556, Somers Point, NJ 08244 or drop a new, unwrapped toy into one of designated boxes in the community.

Lastly, the organization’s mascot and beloved service dog, Trooper, is facing serious health issues now, at the age of 18. Trooper has always been by this program’s side and has created countless smiles through the years. Please send a prayer or positive thoughts his way this holiday season.
