Let it be known that I wish that The MLK Weekend had more “purpose” and maybe not so much “party.” However, Atlantic City has never seen a three-day weekend that could not be made better by a great party. With that said, here is my wrap up of our second big holiday weekend of 2024.
Friday January 12
The “All R&B Night: New Ages vs. Classic Pt. 3” at Anchor Rock Club presented by DJ Fah D.
Fah D’s all R&B Nights are always serious for two reasons. 1. The night brings in hundreds of people from across New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia. 2. The All R&B Nights give local singers a great platform to share their talent with hundreds of people live in-person and on social media.
Saturday January 13
The AC Free Public Library presented its annual MLK Read-in at The Noyes Museum. Each year the AC Free Public Library invites local people to the stage to read some of Dr. King’s most moving and memorable speeches.
Following the Read-in, at 2 p.m. at The Noyes Museum, was a screening of the film “Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in America”. Followed by a discussion.
Before the cold came in, crowds gathered to walk for peace at the Peace Walk from O’Donnell Park to City Hall.
The Suit & Gown Birthday Bash capped off a night of fun for all at the new Island Water Park. All around good guy and anti-violence advocate from Philly, Darryl Shuler held his annual birthday bash there. The ladies and gentlemen were stylish and smooth. Shout out to my buddy Corey “Baby DST” Hatch who started the party with great music.
Sunday January 14
TV’s DJ Jazzy Jeff put together a mixtape of Hip Hop’s best from the last 50 years and brought them onstage for the “All Stars Of Hip Hop” concert at Boardwalk Hall.
The “All Stars of Hip Hop” after party followed at Island Water Park.
The house was filled with people looking to continue their All Stars of Hip Hop experience.
Monday January 15
Shout out to everyone that braved the cold to walk from The MLK Complex to The Civil Rights Garden for the Annual MLK Walk. (I was not that brave. ) I did hear that Dr. Terricita Sass, Ph.D gave a speech that made people forget the dip in the thermometer.
At noon, NAACP President Kaleem Shabazz led The MLK Program at St. James AME Church. The program brought together various faiths including : Muslims, Jewish, and Christians of many dominations. Also attending were various people that normally would be at odds for their political parties.
As the celebrations came to an end for MLK 2024 I was inspired by the fact that this program featured the swearing in of The NAACP Youth Council for 2024.
MLK Weekend 2024 indeed had its celebrations but also it had people that showed they believe in peace and fairness. This MLK Weekend 2024 also showed that diverse generations are all willing to show up for love when so many are still unfortunately committed to hate.
