Syrup Season Kicks Off with Tree-Tapping Event

Below-freezing nights and warmer days mean the sugaring season has begun again for the Stockton Maple Project.

Several professors and staff involved with the project will be tapping trees at the university’s maple grove from 2 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 16. Media are invited to come out to the grove, which is located just off Vera King Farris Drive and opposite parking Lot 1 at the university’s Galloway campus.

A tapping demo will take place along with a syrup and sap tasting and a tour of the maple grove. After the event, the project will host an adopt-a-tree event from 3 to 5 p.m. where members of the community can come to campus to tap their adopted trees. New participants are welcome to come and adopt a tree for free.

Stockton has been awarded two United States Department of Agriculture grants totaling more than $900,000 to promote maple sugaring in the South Jersey region through research and community outreach. The university has also begun selling some of its syrup at local farmers markets.

Email Mark Melhorn at mark.melhorn@stockton.edu to RSVP for the media day. If you are unable to come on Tuesday but are interested in featuring the maple project, please reach out to schedule another day for a tour.
